Just got my first Discman ! Wow !!!

Since I read Duncan's thread with old Sony discmen reviews I really got curious and started to buy old discmen on ebay. And today I got my first one: an old D-33. I got it in a surprisingly very good shape. I hooked my Sennheiser HD 595 to it, threw in the last Groove Armada album and gave it a spin. And man, oh man ! Jesus ! This is the way the old discmen used to sound ??!! I can't believe what I'm hearing! I can't believe this baby can pull of this sound !
Now, I must tell you I had my share of cd walkmen over the years, but none of them from the old league, only the average CD MP3 ESP etc Walkman crap, most of them Sony and most of them obnoxious.
The Sony D-33 sound is really astonishing, spatious, crystal clear highs, emphasized mids, punchy and sexy bass. I'm really speechless. And I can't believe I didn't know about this 'secret' until now.
And if this model, which from my understanding was a modest one back then can sound like this, I can't even imagine the way the superior models sound.
I can't wait to get the other ones too.

great! i should really look through my boxes and hopefully find my disman. Mind you in not old but didnt had any player when i was in high school so i bought the player @ a thrift store for less than $2. It was pretty embarrassing to hold it in the bus to prevent it to skip.

Yeah. I kind of miss my Sony D-5A. The old school Sony players had the juice to power most of the current headphones today and were built like tanks with quality DACs. Granted they ran $200+ when they first came out, but I believe the goal of top sound quality was met back then. Most of the stuff now are just mediocre at best. Your Sony D-33 is a great discovery. Keep and cherish it.

Discman? Pfft. If you want truly retro portable music that totally slays today's MP3 players, you havent lived until you've carried a record player around on your back. The vinyl has to be pushed in a wheelbarrow, which is a bit of a pain, but hey....

I know what you mean. It's really funny that these were considered portable back then. Four R6 batteries, and the player made of metal, a total weigth of around half a kilo...But the sound ! Of course I won't use this one as portable.

I don't think they were as valued then as they are now, in what concerns sound quality, and I think one of the reasons is that now we try them with higher quality headphones, and see their potential and see how they can drive these headphones, while back then people just used them with the headphones they were supplied with.

What's really odd is I've noted alot of younger folk (I'm 52) carrying portable cd players on local transit.

This tells me something.

The ONLY reason, I don't use my portable Kenwood player on the road anymore is I don't want to scratch my valued cd's and yes they do skip DESPITE the oversampling.

Yup, the sound from a good PCDP OR mini-disc player is REALLY tough to beat.

Oversampling has nothing to do with skip reduction. Oversampling is for the purpose of removing artifacts when the signal is passed through an analog filter to the output.
