Audio Technica ES-10 with Iphone 3GS, with amp?

Hi everyone,

I am a newbie to this forum and want to seek advice.

Background, I have the Iphone 3GS as my music player and listen to a variety of music, mainly RnB, Rock and Pop.

When I am commuting to and from work (in Hong Kong), I put on my Sennheiser CX95 earbuds (would these earphones sound better with an amp?)

When I am not commuting to work, I would normally use headphones. I previously had the Monster Beats Solo. At the time I thought the sound was good but I'd put the iphone EQ to 'treble booster', I liked them coz they were portable. But as have been reported numerous times on forums, durability was an issue and the d@mn headphones broke (after 4-5 months of weekend usage )... so I was back to the market for a new pair of cans.

I have just paid deposit for the Audio Tehnica ES-10 (approx USD375). The store keeper initially recommended the Sennheiser HD-25s plus the Audio Technica AT-PHA30i coz i really wanted some headphones for the few flights that i'd be on this week and i actually really liked that combination too but don't know why I actually went with the ES-10... anyway... after reading a bit on the AT-PHA30i... with general consenus of over-priced and could do better plus it uses power from iphone, I was wondering if anyone could give me some recommendations?

Budget wise, I would hope to stay below 300USD for now, for a (very) portable amp.

Thank you very much in advance,

James

ES10 is a wonderful and great sounding piece of headphone. Played straight from my comp unamped, it sounds great already. How much more if paired with an amp. Mine has burned in for around 120+ hrs already and it has improved quite a lot. Bass is tighter and less boomy, mids are smooth and highs are crystal clear. I would highly recommend them for portable or home use. You cant go wrong with it

The problem, if the ES10 is at all like the ESW10JPN, is isolation. You'll still hear "please stand clear of the closing doors" or "I have you pressure, you have pressure" when you're commuting.

I agree - the ES10 is now the best portable headphone I own, and is great for around the city because it does let some ambient sound in. Which is why it is still not my headphone of choice for travelling, this still being the HD25 for its superior isolation. The ES10 doesn't need amping to get a good sound out if it - might improve a little, but its certainly not necessary.

oh man... I can't wait...

What do you guys use to put the headphones in whilst travelling etc?

(Eventually I might get the HD25-1 too for travelling... hahaha they sounded awesome)

I use the Audio-Technica AT-HPP5 Headphone Case, and love using my ALO-Rx amp with the ES10. Oh and here is a link if needed : AudioCubes.com - Audio-Technica AT-HPP5 Headphone Case - AT-HPP5 -

since its for portable use, adding an amp would certain improve the sound, but at a lost of portability. Also while on the go you might not even about to concentrate on the music enough to be able to tell the difference.

from my own experience, I brought a Fiio E1 to amplifier my music from Iphone to UM3X, while in a silent environment, i do appreciate the improvement. but hell the Fiio E1's cable is longggg. At the end of the day I only use it while im in a library or similar place.

hope my info its relevant to you

I am using ATH-ESW9 and since I am using it for travelling and walking to work I decided it is not worth adding a portable amp to it since there is no chance the difference will be big enough with it in the conditions I am using it in.

Thanks everyone,

I'll go amp-less for now, Audio-Technica AT-HPP5 Headphone Case and when I do decide to get another set of headphones for travelling purposes (most probably the HD25s) then I'll look into an amp again (probably 3move or xxs).

Thanks again!!!
