iMod Died - Suggestions and Advice

First off, no suggestions about getting a clip of HiFi Man etc., I like this format, and I have heard other DAP including Sansa, Cowon etc. and the improvement is minimal at best for me, and it is not worth the loss of the incredible convenience of using iTunes and the 200 GB of ALAC files i have.

Yesterday my poor 5.5 gen iMod died. I think it is the HD, as it won't charge, won't turn on and all I heard was a constant clicking and spinning of the drive trying to be read (at least my interpretation of the sound). However, I am not 100% sure. So should i look to invest another ~$250 for a new 240 gb HD or a 64 GB flash drive or just pronounce it dead and use my regular iPod 160 gb classic. Any one ever encounter this issue. Any help appreciated.

If it won't charge, are you sure it's the hard drive? My 5.5G won't charge or last more than a few seconds without being unplugged. I replaced the battery, and I'm pretty sure the logic board is toast. I swapped the hard drive, and it still does it.

Before you spend any money, I've got two suggestions for you:

1. Smack it. If the hard drive is stuck, smacking it could fix it. It worked for two of my 4th gens. Both are still running strong.

2. Do all the reset, restore, etc. stuff, try a different charger, etc.

If it is indeed dead, that sucks. Since you are so adamant about keeping iTunes and ALAC, I suggest you just start using your 160GB Classic. That is, unless you have enough money to replace your logic board and have it iModded or diymodded.

Tried all those things, won't reboot or even light up the screen at all. I think it is the HD because of the constant whirring and clicking it does.

Does the Ipod come on while it is plugged up? If you decide to upgrade the hard drive to 240gb I suggest you try here:

hard drive and battery upgrade kit for 5th generation video ipod

Much cheaper than $250 and you get a complete kit.

Clicking noise most certainly means hard drive death. Imo just stick with your 160gb and see how it is for a few weeks, then reevaluate.

I would look into just getting another HDD if that is what it is. Could it be the battery, maybe it can't give enough juice to turn the disks of the HDD?

What hard drive is the 240gb one? And why is it so cheap right now $170. I am looking for a hard drive for my cowon q5w and if I can fit that hard drive in there I will buy.

That looks great, $170 for 240 gb drive and new battery!. I may just do this. Do you know anything about this company like reliability?

LeeMark,

I've personally never have bought from this company, this price reduction has been going on for a few months now. I only suggested this to you because you would be able to kill 2 birds with one stone, as you would be able to replace the hard drive and the battery if either/both of these turns out to be your problem. One thing I like about this company is that they match the hard drive/battery to your particular Ipod depending on model number. Hope this info helps.

Well, I too a shot, since it was a great price. I will try and do it and tell you all how it turns out. I do hear differences between the iMod and the classic, so i thought it was worth it. If I feel that the differences aren't so great once I fix it, I can always sell it here.

I received this: hard drive and battery upgrade kit for 5th generation video ipod.

It was simple to replace the HD and battery and the ipod starting right up. I am currently loading my 200 gb of lossless files. I will update how it works tomorrow. In summary, it was the HD and it is now fixed.

Lol I just ordered one to try on my cowon q5w. Chances of success probably less than 5% wish me luck .

Why not just get yourself a clip/fuze and Rockbox it? Rockbox supports ALAC, and you can still continue to use itunes if you wish. Plus it is considerably cheaper than getting a new ipod, gives you better sound quality and an equalizer that actually does something.

LeeMark,

Glad this worked out for you and that your Imod is now back in service. Enjoy!
