I forgot about that! Nice. That was a beautiful sounding set. Do you still listen to it? Gorgeous treble is what I primarily remember.

Nice comparison. I own the HE-5s, and some Stax lambda Sigs. I agree with your comparison between the two. I've listened to the hd800s, but unfortunately not the magnums. I think that the HE-5s do strike a good balance between electrostats and dynamics. I even prefer them to the hd800s. However, overall I prefer my signatures. One area I think the HE-5s edge out the signatures is vocals. They have the best vocals(male and female) I ever listened to. I think a lot of people gave up on them early due to the top end sizzle. I got mine used, and I don't know if they were completely burned in or not, but it was still a little hot in the upper region. But now that is completely gone. I guess they do require a lot of burn in. Great write up.

Thanks, this is the review I was waiting for. How long did it take you to get your Magnums finished?

I was one of the original customers, so it was a few months due to the problems Rhydon had with driver coating reliability. Looks like he's doing a batch every couple of months now though.

Very nice read. I'm not sure if I can tolerate anything brighter than the HD800 though.

Hey Currawong,

This review was done with the Series 1 drivers right? Did you ever listen to the Series 2 drivers?

I'm waiting for the series 2 drivers.  Time to send off an email in fact...

Two months later, the drivers are here and I'm happy to have them back. Things are a little different now though, with a more tame treble and porting on the back of the drivers which seems to have changed the bass.  They are now tonally closer to the HF-1s.  I'll update my review once I've had time to compare them to my Stax rig.

I've updated the main review today with details of the V2 drivers.

The Magnums seem like a terrific can.  I never realised that boutique manufacturers have so much to offer... I've always been a mass consumer myself, but recently converted and these Magnums seem very interesting - boutique guys seem to have more passion and are much less profit and marketing orientated.  Thanks for a terrific review!

Great impressions CW, thanks for taking the time.

An interesting point about value for money - I used the SR60 as a base with the "lite" version of Rhydon's mods. Obviously miss out on the gymbals and other nicer bits of the higher end grados.... but it adds up to about $300 all up.

Rhydon told me he could hear no difference between the lite and full versions. And now you find the sound experience comparable to some much more expensive phones.

If they pair well with lower end amplification, could make for a low cost "higher end" sound.

Have you tried your magnums with amps lower down the price chain?

I am tempted to take on the balanced route once again. Have you ever listened to them SE? I'm assuming the biggest difference would be headstage?

Assuming similar gear, yes, considering the supra-aural design of Grados, the width of the headstage with them is remarkable to me when used with the Phoenix. It doesn't go quite as wide with the SE amps I've tried, such as the Luxman P-1, but that was the same with HD-800s as well.  I imagine top-end SE amps would give a similar result as the balanced Phoenix though, going by my experience with Audiovalve RKV.

That's interesting.  I haven't said it, but I suspect that the main benefits beyond the driver is the custom aluminium housing that holds it.  I suspect that (unlike Denons for example) the plastic on Grados isn't seriously susceptible to vibration in a way that would be detrimental to sound quality, unless possibly one listens at high volumes.  If the SR-60-based Lite is essentially as good as the full mod at $300, then they I'd say they are the best value dynamic headphone I can think of.
