Indeed on both accounts   Smeggy is my new hero.

To say that I am psyched to hear and even see these in person is putting it lightly.

This will be my first pair of Orthos.  Now I know why all my attempts at owning orthos has failed in the past.  I was destined for THUNDERPANTS

Thunderpants.

I was very curious to hear these. My curiosity mainly stemmed from the looks as well as having never heard an orthodynamic driver.

The looks are simply gorgeous. The Thunderpants ooze class and refinement. Every detail is just awesome. The added headband support looks completely stock and the even the cups are bookmatched. Simply stunning work from Smeggy.

Looks might be great but in the end, it comes down to sound. Initially I wasn’t impressed in the least bit. When I put them on there was no bass whatsoever. Could it be that other headfi’ers simply hear much differently that I do? NOPE! As it turned out, the ear pads were covering the tiny vent holes on the Thunderpants. Once I cleared the vents, the bass came back and I was able to enjoy the music once more.

There was never really a “WOW” moment. If anything, everything sounded right. The bass, the mids and the treble all sounded right. If I had to nitpick,  I would say these Thunderpants were ever so slightly bass shy. The detail on these headphone is really great. I would say they approach the detail of some of my best IEM’s. When listening to poor quality sources, the Thunderpants immediately let me know it. Every single tick, hiss or flaw was quickly put front and center.

The soundstage was also superb. Mono tracks were located in the dead middle. I played some oldies that are only available in mono and every single track was dead center. When I played well mastered stereo tracks…well…it was just awesome. Transients were just awe inspiring – so fast and so detailed. Every instrument had its place and not only did it have its place, but it seemed to me that the space around them was also preserved.

Do I want some Thunderpants? HELL YES! If I could afford a pair, I would reach out to Smeggy for a pair. They really are amazing. Going back to dynamics left a hole in my heart for some orthodynamics. I just hope that my build sounds at least half as good as the Thunderpants.

I ended up buying a pair of these from Smegster and they should be arriving shortly.

He's put a lot of work into the finish and will hopefully be posting some high res shots when they arrive.

Oh yeah, and commenting on the sound too ;)
