FS- CI Audio VDA-1 Modwright - power prob

This is the best DAC I have owned. Along with my Canton speakers it is the reason I am no longer around here too much. I cycled through lots of DACs and then settled on this for the past year+ and have no GAS at all. But....

For the past few months it has started to need some jiggling of the power plug into the back in order to work. When the connection is good, the blue light is on and the sound is ethereal and just as it has always been. But the jiggling has become more and more frequently needed and I can see and feel that the little prong in the unit is loose (and getting looser) and now it is hard to get it to stay connected.

So this is likely a fairly easy fix for someone who can solder and who, unlike me, is not a DIY moron. This is my idea: I would like to sell this off to an established headfier with lots of posts and reputation who can give life back to this wonderful DAC. I reserve the right to sell to the right trustworthy member, but I will offer the following deal to that person. I will sell for a mutually agreeable price and will then send it to you and you only have to Paypal the $ after the power is working and you see what a great DAC you have.

Send me your offers. And thanks.

PS - No offense to the inevitable PMs from people who do not have a record on this site, but I am going to be careful about where this is sent.

PPS - If anyone wants to offer their DIY services for a fee and can repair this for me, that would be fantastic too. I know I will never replace this for any reasonable amount of money....

I'd like to offer to help you out. I recently was fixing my 30 year old B&O receiver and I received tons of help from forum members that sent me photos and schmatics to help me with a re-wire issue.

I worked in Electronics field for many years and have hand built or repaired 100's of projects over the years.

I have a nice Haiko Soldering rig, use Cardas Quad Solder, and have toolboxes full of test equipment, repair tools, and parts.

My simple offer is this.

Send me the unit, I'll look and see if I need to replace plug socket or anything else. If I do, I'll let you know how much the part is by sending you a link from parts supply place like Digi-Key, or even Radio Shack if need be.

If it is cheap enough part (maybe $5 is OK with you, but $20 is not, your call) I will get the part and perfomr the repair.

I just want to listen to it for say a week or maybe two (your call. What ever you are comfortable with).
I will then pack it back up and send back to you.

Since you obviously love the sound I do not want to buy it from you (although it looks like nice device, I checked it out online and read about the Mods done).

You only obligation would be for exactly what the parts cost if needed. If no part(s) are needed and I only need to re-solder the terminals, then you only have the cost of shipping, that's it.

I would like to "give back" some of the amazing assistance I received this past month in restoring my B&O which was the first audio equipment I bought (at age 16) and I paid $600 for it (in 1974 dollars) and I have had it with me now for 33 years, and it is working again.

So...hang onto it. You may miss it too much if you let it go. If you are OK with me auditioning it for a week or two, that would be a real pleasure for me also.

You can search for my posts, I have contributed on here quite a bit in the 9 months since joining.

I have also bought equipment from two fellow head-fiers and you can ask them both about me (Ryan, the owner of Maverick Audio-D1http://www.head-fi.org/forums/members/justvisit/, and Jeremy Glover, the owner of twisted Cableshttp://www.head-fi.org/forums/f12/qu...57/index7.html)

PM if you want to do this and I will send you my company's address (where I keep all my tools and parts).

wow....

What an incredibly generous offer. I will PM you later tonight to get the right address, but I am definitely sending you the DAC and, once it is fixed, you can audition as long as you like. I will also be sending along some yet-to-be-determined audio bonus as a thank you.

Isn't head-fi fantastic????

Well maybe headfi is not so fantastic.... at least in this case.

I sent this off to Dannyboy and there have been a couple nice e-mail interactions over a few months and he has assured me that all was fine just that he was busy yada yada.....I went out of my way not to rush him or be a pest in any way.

But he still has the DAC and has not answered my recent e-mails at all.  At this point I have just asked him to send back the DAC and told him there was no problem if it was just a bigger hassle than he wanted.  No reply.  I am hoping a little publicity might help me get my DAC back.

Just bumping this up..... Anyone know DannyBoy???

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I don't know DannyBoy but I'm sorry to hear what's happened with your DAC.  By and large Head-fi is fantastic but some people do their part to drag it through the mud.  It does sound to me like you've last a DAC.  I don't think anybody's THAT busy that they can't send a DAC back or even PM/email you.

I am wondering though if you shouldn't ask the mods to move this to the buyer/seller feedback thread or sticky it so it gets attention.  I just don't know how many people are going to see it here.  And if it turns out that, indeed, DannyBoy has stolen your DAC then people need to be told to be cautious when/if they deal with him.

Again though, sorry about the DAC and I hope that it gets resolved quickly for you.

I just heard back and he says that he was on vacation and that it will be sent back (in working order) this week.  It is VERY odd that he could not simply send me an e-mail at some point in the past couple weeks.... BUT if I do get it back I will happily report back here that I had been (reasonably) mistaken about Dan and the DAC.

Well, I hope that Dan now keeps his word.  But your fear was more than reasonable.

But still, how hard would it have been to send an email.  Would have saved a lot of worry!  And possible damage to Dannyboy's rep.

I hope to get it back.

If I do, and he assures me I will, I will try my best to make sure that his rep remains intact.

Thanks for the message.  I will update when things (hopefully) are concluded.
