I used the Luxmann P-1u for the HD800.

For the K1000 I used the RWA 30.2, the same that krmathis uses. The DAC was different though, but I used the same in both systems (it was a Prism Orpheus). None of that equipment was mine, and unfortunately, except maybe for the K1000, they are all out of what I can afford.

I think both of the systems take you to audio Nirvana, but the angling the drivers drove me nuts, they are not for someone obsessive like me.

BTW there was also a pair of Qualias of my friend, and they are also great, but that's got nothing to do with the thread topic.

On a scale of 0 to 100 where 0 is $2 flea market earbuds and 100 is Sony R-10, I would give the HD-800 a 92 and K-1000 a 89.

Seriously, I prefer the HD-800 to the K-1000, but not by that much.

Let's see if the rumored new flagship AKG materializes. That could be a contender.

Just curious when you rate R10 a 100, are you considering the bass light version or bass heavy version?

I have read lately quite a bit about the different versions, but I've never seen in person (let alone hear) a R10, so I want to ask, apart from sound how do you distinguish between them? Were they two different models, by manufacture date or how?

Yes by manufacture date........ I'm confident that somewhere in the Serial numbers around 900-950 Sony shifted from the bass light version to the bass heavy version......there are great things about both, but I prefer the bass heavy version.

I think Quad should strap a headband to a pair of ESL-63's and call it game, set and match. Who's got the biggest headphones now!

P.S. Not recommended for I-pod use.

Between 220 and 900 (or so) they could be either. I have a low 300's set that sounds identical to 2 R10s with the serial numbers in the 1000's.
