I've also got a MiniMAX, driving my Grados. Adding the y2 definitely bumped up the SQ of my setup.

Also, you can start with a y1 and upgrade to the y2 later, if cash flow is an issue.

The y2 build was more challenging than the MiniMAX, but I managed even with my shaky old hands. You'll need a decent iron, a good magnifier, and patience.

Let us know what you decide.
Good luck!

Now that's an idea! Cash is pretty much what the stopper is, so that just might be what I'll end up doing. How much would a y1 be, and what about upgrading it to a y2? I'm glad to hear it did help out the SQ quite a bit, i'm getting excited!

I picked up a Hakko 936 just for the Minimax, along with some quad eutectic solder.. so I think I'm good in those respects.

Oh, thanks for the tip about cleaning steven, never would have considered that. I'm sure ive got some iso alcohol laying around so I should be fine.

I think I ended up spending around $280 total for a fully populated y2. But I went with the custom end plates ($48) - you could drill your own.

I didn't separate the y1 vs. y2 costs, but the y1 alone has 6 different configurations, so I'm guessing you could start with a basic USB-dac y1 for your $200.

Besides, I'm convinced stuff you build sounds better ... although maybe that's the just effect of solder fumes on the brain.

Not including the pre-milled panels and shipping costs, and depending on where you order your parts, a γ1 full config should be roughly around $130 or so.

Man, I almost hate you guys; making me spend money like this... But if all it will cost is ~$130-200 and a few brain cells I think I'll be fine. Thanks for all the input so far.

We all know what it feels like, we've all been there and done that.

Thanks for the words of wisdom

Now I just have to get this ordered without my mom knowing.
