What about Headroom Amps?

Back when I first started visiting this site, Headroom Amps were all the rage.

Now no one seems to be buying their stationary amps. I never hear of headfiers buying the Home per se.

Are Headrooms non-portable amps such a bad value now due to JMT, Antness and the like?

I think everything below the Maxed Out Home is really pricey compared to other stuff out there. (I have put my name on the list to try out a Little Premium, however. I hope to have my own tricked out PPA done by then to compare.)

My next amp purchase will probably be a Max or a Grace 901. The 901 has a slight edge because it costs less, yet looks to be more adaptable to my future (digital & balanced inputs). I can live without crossfeed, in fact I'm still trying to figure out if I even like crossfeed.

So, yeah, I wouldn't say they are a bad value, but not really a good value either.

Agreed with hempcamp. Without the thriving DIY community here and such amps as the Mint, Meta42, PIMETA and PPA, I would say that Headroom amps were a good value (possibly even the basic Airhead model). However, there's no way a medium to large company with a lot more overhead can compete with single DIYers building custom amps.

Frankly, I'm surprised the DIY community has been "allowed" to grow to the point it has on head-fi, since it was guaranteed from the start to leech heavily into the amp sales of any and all head-fi sponsors. I guess the admin figured it was worth it for the extra eyeballs and overall amount of people it has attracted to the board -- and of course Mall-Fi ads make up for it somewhat. But they could easily have pressured the DIY community into going elsewhere and creating their own forum once things reached critical mass, so kudos to Head-Fi for not doing so.
