New bit rate option on iTunes?

Thread Starter
So I noticed that when I connected my ipod to the most recent version of iTunes, there is a new option to "convert higher bit rate sonds to 128 kbps AAC".
This seems like a great new option to increase space; I wonder if there is a way to change from (for example) 320 to 196?

Also, does this create a new folder on your computer of lower bit rate music or is itunes converting only whats on the Ipod's hard drive?

Yeah, it is a new feature in iTunes 9.1.
Seems like 128kbps is the only option though, as the import settings have no influence on this part. Unless there is a hidden setting in a .plist somewhere.

iTunes will convert songs on-the-fly as it transfer them to the iPod/iPhone. No new folder on your computer.

Not to shabby, as long as it works probably.
I've been thinking about looking into a similar feature of J River or going down the long and painful path of converting all my FLAC to 320kbps copies for my portable rig.

I recall this -convert higher bit rate sonds to 128 kbps - option to be available for syncing to my shuffle, not new at all. I tried it once and it sounded like crap.

Starting with iTunes 9.1 (released just a few days ago) this feature is now available for any iPod or iPhone, not just the iPod shuffle.

The low bitrate (128kbps) is the reason it sound crap to you, and hence why the OP wonder if it is possible to set a higher bitrate.

so it's now offering to transcode lossy to lossy? ew.

(i'm sure a few of you guys will have an ALAC source but most people won't.)

Might be good for a jog or something if you just want to listen to your music rather than critique it. Used the feature all the time on the old iPod shuffle, but the new multi-giggers I've found no reason to do that.

Yea I guess that can be useful if you have all of your music in ALAC or 320kbs and you're using your Nano or shuffle to do a quick run; wouldn't need to waste all that space (and you probably wouldn't need the quality either).
