Audiophilia and family members?

So, how did your audiophilia or interest in sound start off? Did you catch the Head-fi bug? Di you catch it from your parents? Have you spread your internest in audio and appreciation of good sound onto others?

For me, it's only just me but my little bro, who's 16, has caught interest, and now wants some Alessandro MS1's to go with his Sansa Fuze
He currently uses my rig and my hand-me-down Nuforce NE-7M's but want some full-size ones he owns himself. MS1 = looks cool in the classroom (particularly with those bright yellow HD414 pads) and at school for him as well and suits all his music and other needs (needs to hear some outside noise)

How about you?

Are you any Chinese or is that just an ID?
I started modding earbuds when I was 7, so. Kinda started early. By the age of 12 I was already screwing around with amps, Hifi receivers, CD players, turntables 'n such. Then two major financial problems hit. Never really recovered to those glorious days.

Picked it up from my Dad. He was more of a speaker guy (as am I, really), but he also owned the AKG K340 and Sennheiser 414s. I love his speaker/stereo rigs; they're amazing. I once listened to the K340s (the 414s were always for our guitar amps, so we didn't wake the Mother unit), and I fell in love with them. Sadly, I didn't find the 340s till after he passed away, so I decided to look into audio equip, and ended up here.

A guitar teacher in Vancouver had a pair of Shure E4Cs. I didn't have a listen because of hygiene, but he told me it'll change music for me, like I have no idea.
I had no idea.
My family don't get it xD.

Yeah, my father has accused me of buying drugs with the money that I spend on headphones... >_>

All of my purchases are shipped to my mother's house as a precaution, she's cool with it.

My dad used to be into audio. Speakers mostly. I don't know how knowledgeable he was about them. He spent probably a few grand a while back on the speakers in our 5.1 system, but only the center speakers under the TV are actually hooked up as far as I know. And I think it sounds like crap (decent crap). He also has some unknown old pair of Shure in-ears that are all white. But, he makes his own tiny crappy tips out of cut-up ear plugs so I doubt he really appreciates them. Also, he goes by Amazon reviews for quality, proven by his claim that the Sennheiser eH-150s he bought my brother and I are easily the best headphones in their price range (I prefer the KSC75 for half price). I hope my newfound hobby doesn't awaken the beast in him, but thankfully he hasn't asked to listen to my setup yet.

My mom and brother are completely oblivious. And they will remain so. Mother doesn't understand the difference between good quality audio and the sound of her budget car speakers pumping radio. Brother listens to YouTube.

Caught it from dad - he designs speakers. He introduced me to good sound, and once I had my own income headphones seemed like the most practical way for me to expose myself to the audio world.

Actually, no one in my family is really into audio. A friend of mine was into car audio, and after riding with him a few times I realized what I was missing in my music. A while after, I put together a car audio system myself. My other main source of music was by headphones, and it quickly became apparent that they couldn't match my car system and thus I was lead here.

My family can hear the difference, they just don't really care for music as much and it's not worth the cost to them. I do try to show good audio to my friends, even those that say they love music, but most of them don't really pursue better equipment, instead sticking with their iBuds or skullcandies.

No one in my family is into audio gear. No one in my family knows I am a headphone guy. Well, they noticed I wear headphones often but they don't know how much they are That's the good thing when you're living alone in another city. Bad thing is I really miss them. ='(

I always loved music, with the Sony MDR V6 to keep my music too myself a world opened up. Three months later Head-Fi and now I couldn't imagine my life without my headphones.

It's not a family thing. The taste in music yes, audio gear no.

Picked up the audiophile bug from, well, here. You lot are the ones that have ruined me with recommendations, and reviews and thoughts, etc! I hate you all!

No on a serious note, I think my dad was reasonably into hi-fi when he was younger. I remember he used to have a fantastic yamaha stereo with some amazing speakers (don't remember which ones now) back when I was younger and couldn't appreciate it. Now that I'm old enough to appreciate hi-fi, he has since gotten rid of it, and decided that rather than piecing a whole new one together, he'd be just as satisfied with a Bose setup, or his current Wireless setup that he has around the house. My mom could care less, though my we did get her a 4 GB Sansa that she has started appreciating, but I've really started making headway on my sister. I managed to convince her to go for the KSC-75s early on, and since then, she's surpassed me on the portable DAP side, beating my 8GB Sansa Clip with her 4GB Sansa Clip and 32GB ZuneHD.
