Ipad! It's here! Anyone Have it yet? - Page 7

I ordered my 3G 64GB iPad Sunday night, because of the extended deadline for the unlimited data plan, which supposedly gets grandfathered in to when I receive it. It wont get here for 2 - 3 weeks, but the VGA adapter is on it's way. I haven't a clue why they don't just wait and send them together, as obviously I have no use for the adapter without the iPad.

I could have been happy with 32GB, but for some reason I resent paying another $100 for just 16 more GB, so I spent $200 more for an extra 48GB. Somehow in my consumer rationality that seemed like a better deal .

Room for more music anyways; I can't wait to play with this thing!

But including accessories, I could have bought my new headphone amp for the price, sigh...

Hey grokit, will you be using a headphone amp with the iPad? If so, there is a thread around here talking about how with the camera kit thing, the iPad can power some USB connected amps. Kind of interesting. I want to see a pic of an iPad connected to a benchmark or something! Haha

Yep! I just posted there recently with someone else's pic from CanJam that had led me to some wishful thinking...

Oooh, you were at Can Jam? Now I'm jealous!!! :)

I can't take credit for the pic, and I was unfortunately not there either

I think you'll like the 64GB 3G, Grokit, that's what I have. And good job on getting grandfathered in to unlimited...what a freakin low blow by AT&T!

I have plugged it into my DacMagic and it works without a hitch.  Of course, the 64GB limit (mine is 32GB which is even worse) is a bit low to make it an all purpose server, but for when you just want to listen to Pandora, Rhapsody, or one of the albums you have on the device, it could come in handy.  I think it would make a nice portable system if you get an amp with a USB Dac built in.

One of the main reasons I decided to get the wifi model instead of the 3G is because I did not want to jump in too deep with the first gen.  However, I would have given it a second thought if I knew unlimited was coming to an end.  I use nearly 4GB a month on my iPhone, so I am pretty sure I would get hammered with the larger data requirements of the iPad.

That applies to nearly everything, so we would agree on this point.

That's really cool to hear uofmtiger, do you find using your Dac while listening to Pandora, smoothes out the lower bit rate at all, or upsamples rather? For me, the iPad couldn't be my everything music server either, especially since now I have some movies on it. But while traveling or whatever, this might make an awesome device. At least it might cut down on the amount of gadgets all around the hotel room! I know there is a USB dac which is positioned right in the cord itself for an ultra portable option. Can't think of the name off the top of my head...

There are two that I know of: the Headphonia/Penguin DAC Cable, and the Devilsound 2.1 DAC. I used to have the Devilsound, and I have the Headphonia. Both are very good at their respective price points.

I have not done any comparisons because I would mainly use it in my bedroom and I have a Little Dot DAC on order for that.  I did plug it into the Dacmagic and it works, but I have not done any comparisons or long term listening.  I would guess that even lower bitrates like you get with Panadora would benefit from better digital to analog conversion.  The Dacmagic has 3 different settings that sound moderately different, so it would definitely help to find a certain sound you would be happy with.

Do you like the DacMagic, in general? I'm not the biggest computer audio guy, but am getting there slowly. I thought about buying an iQube or something, but it looks like the DacMagic up samples to a higher bit rate. Seems to be more bang for your buck, as I really don't need the thing to be portable.

There's been a huge iPad security breach:

Some of the people who have had their information exposed:

Yeah, I like it.  I have it paired with a heed canamp and AKG K701s.  The three phases give you some choices.  To my ears, the first phase gives you tons of detail on the most forward instruments, but buries some of the background (piano sustaining pedal sounds, etc..).  Phase two has a bit more ambiance sound, but you lose some of the small details from phase one.  I have not done a lot with phase 3 yet, to be honest.  I usually just switch back and forth with one (small jazz combos, acoustic, vocals) and two (Dylan albums (lots of ambiance sound in most of the new ones), rock, classical, etc..) depending on the album.

I saw this last night.  From what I understand it only affects 3G versions?

Thanks for the further details, as these genres of music make up quite a bit of what I listen to..very helpful. I'm restructuring my main computer set up at home, and may make a dedicated music server. The more I look at this thing, the more I like...it even has balanced xlr outputs? That's awesome!

And yes about the security breach, it only affects 3G customers, from what I understand. About 10% are affected, or 140k people. I really don't really know what the implications will be other than spam, but we'll see. I don't know who's running the show at AT&T, but they should be demoted. A topic for another thread, I guess...
