Re-cabling question.

Alright ladies and gents, Im thinking about re-wiring my k518s, is there a way to open them up easily? I was thinking cabling them to mini xlr and then make a bunch of difrent ones like mxlr to rca then mxlr to 3.5mm etc.

So the question is, does anyone have a diagram to open these puppies up?

Is this ok wire? Or is twisted wire instead of solid wire better?

Just take the pads off and you will see 3 screws. That will allow you to pull the driver off of the cup. Very simply built headphones.

Unless you are going to use an inline connector and hang them from the cup, you will have to do a bit of drilling. Be VERY careful of drilling the driver area, as I accidentally drilled into mine when attempting a mini xlr mod. I switched over to mini mono jacks on my second pair and everything went swimmingly. You still have to remove some plastic, but the openings only have to be slightly enlarged. They fit a little better. If you search for my K81DJ (same headphones) mod thread that I posted recently you can see how it looks with mini mono jacks.

No, I thought they just I saw one that was like a xlr but it was smaller and was called a mini xlr. Ill see if i can find a picture, normal xlr is fine to but I just thought it was more expensive/bulky

Also fraggler, I see the screws with the last screen removed but there under the ear pads, is there a way to remove the earpads, i looked for ur thread but i couldnt find it.

The earpads just come off by gently tugging outward and upward. There is a flap that runs all the way around in a little groove that is formed where the two halves meet.

Here is where I have bought mini xlr's for my Shure SRH840's: eBay Store – Vafam Sound Audio Components: Search results for. They shipped really quickly.

However, Neutrik has since released mini 3 pins if you are interested. You can get them at Markertek for pretty damn cheap. Choose USPS Priority Mail and it will give you a quote of like $8, but if all you are getting is a few connectors, it will actually only be a couple cents over $5. Jacks: REAN a Brand of Neutrik AG Neutrik RT3MP-B REAN TINY 3-Pole Male Nickel/Gold Chassis XLR Connector XLR Connectors at Markertek.com Plugs: REAN a Brand of Neutrik AG Neutrik RT3FC-B REAN TINY 3-Pole Female Black/Gold XLR Cable Connector XLR Connectors at Markertek.com

The ebay ones are Switchcraft clones and are of very good quality. The Neutrik's are very nice as well, and I might like their latch release mechanism better. Their strain relief system is quite nice.

Standard xlr's would be ridiculously big and cumbersome for the headphones.

And just so you can see them, here is my thread: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f6/akg...le-mod-480453/

Do you think that one 4/5 pin mini xlr be better than two three pin mini xlrs?
It'd be a lot simpler.

You mean route a cable over the headband into the the other cup and then use just one connector? Personally, I wouldn't simply because it messes with the aesthetic and adds something for them to snag on. I liked the balance that they have and their folding form factor. If you fold them, you will have to have extra slack in the wire which will stick out when not folded.

I still think mono mini's are the way to go, having tried both mods. Simpler to mod the headphones, and they make for a more compact cable and entry. They don't lock, but for a portable cable, it might be better so they can break away if snagged. As small as the mini xlr jacks are, they still take up a bit of real estate on the cups.

If you do go with the single entry, you can still use a 3 pin mini xlr, combining the two grounds on one pin unless you are trying to go balanced.

Stranded is a much better choice for headphone cables, especially for portables. Almost all of the SPC from Navships will be pretty stiff, even the stranded. 30awg is also quite thin and will probably not be very durable.

May or might not help...
