AKG 271 Studio - Page 3

The K271s are a powerful, tight, neutral, detailed headphone with incredibly deep bass and beautiful, soaring highs. The catch is they sound like crap unless you feed them through a really mean amp (I think that pairing them with the headroom cosmic amp with a reference module upgrade and an iriver mpx series player is a match made in heaven).

These headphones are incredibly revealing of bad recordings, sources, and so on, even for a closed phone. They would make great studio headphones or DJ phones if powered properly.

Cheers,
Geek

So would the K271s work okay with a standard cheap receiver and cd player a la Best Buy? The concern about having enough bass, and a few other comments here have started to tip me to DT 250-250 or 80.

so... $879 american is a little more than I was looking to spend on my portable amp... does the cosmic work fine as a home amp as well? after reading the specs on headrooms site... it looks like it can... my only issue with it is the size... I suppose it is portable since it runs off of batteries, but its kind of large too... my portable player is 4.4" x 3.2" x 1.2"... adding another device weighing in at 5.25" x 1" x 6" will take up a lot more bag space... any suggestions on a smaller amp that wont bankrupt me? I was looking at the porta corda and the total airhead... as well as the previously mentioned cmoy based DIY amp...

as for the iriver mpx (I'm assuming you mean slim x, if not, what is this?)... well, I'm quite happy with my current portable player (archos av320)... my only concern about it is the fact that there is no line out... just an audio out... will this be a problem when feeding the signal to an amplifier?

for a home source... assuming I get an amp... what is the best way to go if I just want to listen through headphones? I am not really interested in the new dvd or super cd formats... but I would like to get the best source for my cd's that I can at home... without spending an insane amount of money for a marginal increase in quality... some of the DJ-type single CD players seem like they might be the way to go... but I'm not really sure what I should be looking at when making my decision on a source...

anyways... this is getting a little away from the AKG 271 Studio discussion... but could be usefull for 271 owners I suppose...

I'm gonna have to disagree with scorched earth. I dont think that they really need a badass amp to sound good. In fact they are a fairly easy to drive phones. I run mine out of a reciever, while obviously I could benifit from an amp, they still sound great.

Everything is always relative.

I don't agree with scorched earth either, because I have directly compared AGK K271s with HD-600 and HFI-650 and both are more revealing in the high frequencies and HFI-650 especially in the bass department.

Then again, compared to many other cans, yes AKG 271s are very revealing without being annoyingly bright (like HFI-650 can be). They strike a good balance between revealing and enjoyable sound, which is important for long duration monitorin sessions.

I guess I'm wondering if it's really worth it to pay twice as much for something like the K271s, compared to the Sony V6, for use with an cheap receiver. Probably have less problems with fatiguing harshness I suppose.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a home source and an amplifier (home and portable use, or two separate amps) to be used with the AKG 271 Studio?

see my above post for more clarification... if this should be in another forum, just let me know and I'll repost...

thanks...
