I've recabled my Denon AHD 1000 about a month ago and it's been working great. However, 3 days ago I've lost sound on the left side. Thinking it might just be a bad soldering point I resoldered it, but that didn't fix it. I've tried swapping the left sound driver to the right side, which was still working, and I still don't have any sound coming out of it.

Is there any way to test to make sure that it's the sound driver that's broken? If that's the case, is it possible to fix it at all or are the cans finished?

measure the resistance on the following things
INSIDE the headphones, at the drivers.
  • across the solder joints at the driver
  • from one solder joint to any connection (every solder joint should match up with 1 thing on the plug at roughly 0 ohms)

If the resistance measured across the solder joints at the driver is within a few percent of what the MFR says it should be odds are in your favor that the driver is good! If it measures infinity (or significantly higher than what the MFR says it should) your headphones are now part donors. sorry. If it measures zero you may or may not be screwed.

If you find that there is a connection on the headphone side that does not match up with 1 connection on the plug your cable is weird.

If you measure from solder joint to plug and get zero to 2 places you probably have a short in the cable. unsolder the cable from the drivers, and measure the drivers. If they measure zero your headphones are part donors. If the measurement makes sense find the short.
