Forthcoming Musical Fidelity M 1 Pure Class A Headphone Amp

Hi all,

Apologies if this replicates an existing thread but just got this reply in response to a query to the NA availability of the X-Can V8p. Here goes:

In June, Musical Fidelity will introduce the M1 DAC, which is more than just an improved version of the V-DAC. It’s housed in a new, sleek chassis that is actually ½ the width, and the exact height, of the new M3-series. It has a robust linear power supply built into the unit and a detachable power cord. It has four switchable digital inputs on XLR, RCA coax, optical, and USB, and both balanced and single-ended outputs.

Its overall technical performance exceeds that of the V-DAC: better signal-to-noise ratio, lower jitter, and a low, 50ohm output impedance with healthy 4.4V output voltage that should drive any preamplifier in existence. It will also accept up to 24bit/192kHz source material via RCA coax and AES/EBU.

Following the M1 DAC, and available toward the end of the summer, will be the M1 HPA Pure Class-A Headphone Amplifier, housed again in the same new, ½-width M1 chassis. For those who’ve experienced the gorgeous Class-A AMS-series, you have a pretty good idea what this little honey will sound like: rich, full, and smooth, but with resolution and grip that is really out of this world. Naturally this all comes along with great technical performance: low noise, flat response... all the things you’ve come to expect from Musical Fidelity.

I've heard the integrated this HPA will be based on and it's very good. Anyway, an interesting new contender perhaps.

best,

o

Well, it's always nice to see a new product to expand the market choices that we have. However it's a shame they drag up the old "rich, full, and smooth" trying to con us that a unit has a specific sound quality. I've always found that it varies a lot with different 'phones, different sources, and my mood!!!

Still, the X-Can seemed to perform OK, so this new one might be good. Time will tell. I wonder what the price of the M1 HPA will be?

J.

The only downside is the heat issue w/pure class A.

True. But having lived with a Sugden A21SE for a year now, I'd say pure Class A is, like the old chocolate ads put it, "sinful, but delicious..."

That photo is the M1 DAC right? I don't see a volume control.

...and no connectors / sockets... yup, I'm sure that was the DAC.

What is the M1 HPA going to replace? v-can or x-can?

heh, can never make too many assumptions about that

If the pricing falls in line with thier current amplifiers I don't think we will see too many people rushing out to buy these.

...you are right. I've just spotted that Silvercore also put their headphone socket on the back of their preamplifier. D'oh !

Expected end of August.

The new amp looks like the V8P and has the same features with a pre-amp and USB DAC built in. It will be £100 more at £499 though.

Solid state or tube?

Class A Solid State.

Also unlike the X-Can V8 it has no option for an upgraded power supply (so I'm going to 'assume' that means it has a high quality power supply)...
