iPod G4 vs. 1st Gen PS3

I’m new to all this so I’m wondering if this is typical of most portable audio players.

I was able to start the music from each device simultaneously and then use the receiver to switch between inputs to compare between the sources.

The PS3 sounded markedly better than the iPod in every respect.

Equipment Used:
STR-DG500 – AV Reciever
LG 50PG20 – Plasma Television
PS3 (CECHAxx) – 1st Generation Playstation3
iPod G4 – 4th Generation iPod
Klipsch S4 – In ear monitor headphones.
RUSH Spirit of the Radio Greatest Hits encoded at 256 VBR using iTunes.

The PS3 is connected to a LG TV via HDMI and then from the TV to the STR-DG500 via Optical.
PS3 > LG TV > STR-DG500.
I copied the encoded audio files to a USB memory stick and played them through the PS3 via a front USB ports.

The iPod G4 is connected to the STR-DG500 via a line out adapter for the iPod to RCA inputs on the back of the STR-DG500.
iPod G4 line out > STR-DG500.
The same audio files used on the PS3 where used on the iPod.

That a full-size AV component sounds better than a pocket-sized portable?
Yeah, that's not uncommon (nor surprising).
