I am selling the C2C amp (with stepped attenuator) in order to get the dac19dsp+C2 combo.
I have been constantly amazed with the sound quality of the C2C which is very transparent and musical at the same time. I am only getting the newer C2 amp out of curiosity and to try the ACSS connection between the dac19dsp and the C2.
By the way, since I got the C2C I rarely listened to my other headphone amps (except when I am reviewing equipment and need to have a few point of references).
The C2C is a class A power amp (which is more musical than class A/B). It is a fully discrete design, zero negative feedback and uses the current gain technology.
The technology used to control the volume level is quite exceptional at this price level. The stepped attenuator (which uses top Vishay dale resistors) controls the gain level of the amp. It means that there is no attenuation in the classical way where a volume pot or a resistor attenuates the voltage signal.
To the best of my knowledge only a handful of ultra-high end companies have implemented such a method in their preamps: Mark Levinson, Accuphase, Ayre and Krell.
What it means is that whether the stepped attenuator is set very low or very high, you still get a high level of resolution. You can read Stereophile’s review of the Ayre Preamp (here: Stereophile: Ayre KX-R line preamplifier).
In real life, it means that even at very low level of listening, you still get plenty of details and you don’t need to crank up the volume to get those low level details. At the same, the C2C is so smooth sounding, that you can play it very loud without any hint of distortion.
However, I have to warn people that this amp is very revealing. If the source is bad, it won’t gloss over the details. But at the same time, it doesn’t emphasize sibilance and edginess. It is a very honest and revealing amp, yet it still manages to sound natural and faithful.
I am asking x for the headphone amp excluding shipping charges.
Note: My unit is a 220v-240v unit (it should work fine for the UK and European countries)
