Slow Ipod 160 Classic.

Hello everyone,
my ipod starts to go slow: very slow. I own it about three years and lately, in doing whatever, it has become very slow. It is slow in trying to load songs and covers an also in playing songs: sometimes playback stops even for a few seconds and then return to work normal. I have a 160GB classic and is about half full. Any suggestions? Should I delete all songs and upload them again?
Thanks in advance, Andrea.

It is also possible that it is the first signs of a failing harddrive with the iPod having to do loads of rereads to get data of the drive

I hope not!
I'm performing defrag utility at the moment. In fact the disk is very fragmented (in three years I have never checked its condition) and the slowness could be due to this. We will see what will happen soon.
Thanks.

I just had a "duh" moment...never considered that a Classic could be defragged!! Something for me to consider down the road (I've owned my Sept '09 version for only 6 weeks or so)..

Ok, defrag done but it still does not work as expected. Same hard disck problems, it is slow also the click wheel: it is difficult to center the menu choices because scrolling is inaccurate.
Guys, any other suggestions?
Thanks, Andrea.

To me it sounds more and more like a failing harddrive although I don't quite see how that would affect the click wheel unless that involves reading data from the disk in order to display the list you navigate because then when it has to retry reading you keep on rolling the wheel and then gets too far

Thanks nc8000.
I wish that does not depend on the hard drive. I called Apple customer service and they suggest to use the restore function and see what happens. That means leave the iPod in sync for at least a few hours ...
Thanks again.

Backup your music and then make a firmware update/refresh! perhaps that helps!

Even make the update/refresh if it says that you have the latest version installed!

Yeah, perform a full firmware to eliminate that part.
If the slowness is still present it might have a physical issue (ex. hdd) and hence service might be needed.

I'm sorry guys, but I'm reading now your advice on the firmware: perhaps too late, maybe not....
I started restore function a couple of hours ago: ipod had returned to work quickly and well, even if there was not a song inside!
At moment (it is already a couple of hours), I'm uploading my full archive about approximately 10,000 song in MP3 at 320.
I'm anxiously awaiting ....
Thanks, Andrea.

Sync completed: everything seems back to normal. The ipod works just like new out of the box.
Thanks again to everyone for tips and tricks.
Regards, Andrew.
