I believe the sansa support true line out and can have a lod through their usb ports...

just to follow up with this topic.. with the CB07, i cannot control the volume on the ipod classic, and the iPhone 3G shows "this accessory is not made to work with iPhone", but the volume control also disappears

It's pretty easy to see that the iPod's LO and HPO are different. If you don't want to believe your ears, just test them through the same amp, volume matched; or, use a LO adapter and then connect the HPO to an external sound card and record a test signal (40Hz square wave, RMAA test), then do the same to the LO.

You will get different results, even at the same volume. That should be enough to show that it isn't a 'glorified' HPO. There is no amp circuitry in the LO. The iPod (like just about every single player out there nowadays) uses SOC chips, so a lot of the final stage is determined by the main decoder, but the HPO and LO are clearly different.

An external device controlling the volume has nothing to do with amped signal or not; the signal comes from the decoder/DAC and if the device calls it to drop output volume, then that is that.

^So then what's the difference between the LO on a regular ipod and an iMod?
