Hello Again...

Great to hear from you again...

Am really enjoying this I checked out the DT990 & DT 880 Premium Semi-Open Stereo Studio Headphones (600 Ohms) Both were same price $319 so if I understand correctly the only real differience is the bass?

$319 is a very good price compared to UK and certainly Norway where they would be much more expensive just got to try and find best place to buy..as import tax & Fees in Norway = 35% in total +shipping!! it`s always a tough call when trying to buy things.

The Little Dots are good value but are strictly entry-level gear. If that's as far as you intend to go (or can afford to go), one of the models may work for you. But they will really only give you a glimpse of what the headphones under discussion here are capable of sounding like. I had the MkIV for quite a while but kept "demoting" it to a secondary rig every time I picked up something better. I ended up selling it. Nothing wrong with it, just not particularly revealing or detailed when compared with better...and everything I tried upstream was better. Good luck.

Little Dot + Beyer Dt880/990??

Hi Carldwards......Good to hear from you

And just when I was starting to feel really good about all this..you sow the seeds of doubt? so the Little Dots not up to the Beyers potential...

Do you think there is a cheaper headphone which is more in tune with the little Dots?.....because you are correct, I will not be planning on upgrading the amp once purchased. so it is important to make the right choice?

I am not wishing to get in to a ratcheting up of phones & amp...just wish to strike a good balance if possible..any additional suggestions very much valued

I am finding it difficult to find the Beyers 880/990DT@ 600ohm in the UK-I can only find 250 ohm?

I completely agree. If you never heard a really good amp, then you would think little dots are great. Once you hear what a really good amp sounds like then you realize that the little dots are decent but not great. A lot of people who are raving about how great little dots are really haven't heard a really good amp. I think little dots are good for the price, but like the saying goes, "you get what you pay for".

Don't fall for the old "its too cheap to be good logic" of gear collectors.

Stereophile is going to feature LD MKIII on their upcoming edition.

This all talk of more money better quality is more of a collector mentality than anyone genuinely interested in music fidelity.
^ that is the most blatantly false statement I have ever read. So much so I won't bother quoting it.

LD MKIII is certainly enough to enjoy music, but there is better.

Diminishing returns is a much better argument. More money = better quality is very real, and that is why we have better amps than the MKIII. Then you can go balanced too.

But, of course anyone who chooses a balanced amp/ source, or any headphone other than the AKG 70X is fundamentally retarded and is fooled by a price tag.
^when you come a cross a false statement, rebut it, don't wimp out by saying "oh its so false i won't bother".

and to rebut it you have to first define whats "good sound", secondly, how to quantify it and finally how money to quality ratio works and where is the equilibrium.

Now get on with it...

I hoped this thread would not go the way of so many? but I suppose it is inevitable..Opinions at all levels are very divided..as can be seen clearly on this Forum and others...

I am quite certain, that there maybe many products deemed better than the LITTLE~DOTS: but is that not the case all the way up the scale?

When you guys say

Then Ok which amps are you refering to? let us know which are these really good amps...and how much do they cost$$$?

Please remember I am a novice at all this...I am just trying to find a good balance for my set up which is not Audiophile by anymeans...

::HRT MUSICSTREAMER II+
::CUSTOM MADE CABLES----> USB/INTERCONNECTS/SPEAKER

Please keep the suggestions coming

Of course they would cost quite a bit more than a mkiv. There is one that I use to own that's in the same price range(414.00 from pacific valve). That is the ming da mc84 c07. I think it is the best "buget" amp on the market. It was a signifcant upgrade from a mkiv I use to own. If you have the buget, the darkvoice 337 is also a very good option. I think all of the woos would be a better option as well. I stated little dots were good for the price, so they aren't bad. But if you are looking to get the most out of your headphones, then there are better options.

For this purpose, the Little Dot amps will do a great job. There is no doubt that there are more expensive amps that will sound better - but in my opinion, it is better to start with something solid and inexpensive (the Little Dots are both) than getting a super-high-end setup right away. If you feel the need to upgrade, you can still sell the amp and get a better one.

Personally I can say that I am satisfied with the gear that I have. That's all that matters for me. I will definitely upgrade to a better amp sometime, a better source, better headphones, probably even try to recable my cans (I'm a cable sceptic). But until then, I will simply enjoy my music with what I have. I hope you will do the same, regardless of what amp/headphones you buy

HI Norskman,

If you are looking for the DT 990/600 you can find them at B&H . It says the price is $ 319, but if you click on add to cart for lower price, you will find the price is $ 229,95.
$ 281,75 incl. shipping to Norway.
I have bought them there, and even including taxes it was cheaper then buying them from Beyer in Germany or anywhere else in Europe for that matter.

I am listening to them at this moment through my Little Dot III, and I like them very much.
I know there are better amps available. This however is always the case, like you stated yourself in this thread.
For what it's worth,my advice would be to get yourself a fixed budget and see what you can get for that money and draw the line there.

Anyway, good luck with your search. I know it is not easy.

Hi Moodyrn & Mad Dude....

Many thanks for your reply..I do appreciate it..I think I can see where you are going with this point of view..but we all have to draw the line somewhere...

for example the Beyers will not reach there full potential with the little dot amps? Ok maybe I could look at a cheaper headphone?> but maybe this is backward thinking?and in my situatiom the Beyer 880/990Dt,s will sound like heaven to me...

The Woo`s are out of my league..On the other hand ming da mc84 c07maybe an alternative but would require more feedback & convincing?
I read reviews of Darkvoice and the little Dots seemed to better them?maybe I am mistaken..

I can never see a situation (in my position) where I will be able to uppgrade to a better amp..better speakers..and so on...and for these reasons I really relate to Mad-dudes comments:-

Sure if a case can be made for Darkvoice or Pacific valve? then I am all earsbut otherwise I will go with the Little Mk III?

Once again many thanks for the great feedback

Hi Rpveld
many thanks for your really helpful reply am really obliged to you....
you will have maybe read my most resent reply..and I am trying not to get myself to deflected...but am ,as always open to good advice...

Have just done some calculations on prices and $281 would =£190+shipping or €211+shipping I have Import tax/fees to pay @ 35% on top of those prices

The other thing is..I can not find any 600ohm in UK? and I have tried..so it maybe I have to buy from USA?

It is always like this...when thinking of buying luxury items...

I am very much edging towards the littlke dotIII

all the very best Steve
