All killer and no filler.

Loving what ive heard so far.

Bought it yesterday and I had a quick listen. Pretty good if not wildly different from the last couple of albums. It'll need a few spins to get my head around it.

Now all I have to do is decide whether I want to see 'em live when they come out here.

Gazza, maaate you must go. I'll be there with bells on the 21st of May.

I'm waiting for my vinyl and download card that was shipped yesterday. I've been listening to the Myspace stream and like what I hear, despite the low bit-rate cruddy sound

I've spent some time with it. Widower has really stuck out to me so far, with it's rolling piano and epic build. That track is awesome. Then Room Full of Eyes follows for an extra shot of awesome.

I really like it so far, some of the tracks get so damn epic.

Interesting,
there`s the inner ear on the left, but what`s that on the right?

I have never been able to like either this band or Mastodon but I generally quite partial to everything else in the progressive metal genre.

I thought the ear was holding a knife. (lol)

DEP is a difficult band to get into. Super technical music that at first listen, sounds like abrasive noise. Once you pick up on the time shifts and intermittent melodies, it slowly reveals its beauty.
Mastodon on the other hand is really a completely different genre and although technical , should be more easily accessible with its strong melodies and familiar song structures.

Try these songs first:

DEP:

Black Bubblegum
Dead As History
Highway Robbery
Setting Fire to Sleeping Giant
Unretrofied

Mastodon:

Workhorse
Seabeast
Naked Burn
Divinations
Colony of Birchmen

I thought the same, like "killing your hearing"

I find Milk Lizard by DEP also quite approachable.

Nah it's not that, I just find their melodies bland and I can't stand the vocals (which is saying something considering most death metal is okay with me). I just don't hear any interesting progression in the melodies, sure it's technical, but just about every death metal band can play fast and technical nowadays.

For example's sake what I would say is both melodic and highly technical:

I hear ya (Necrophagist is awesome), I hear what you are saying about DEP too, I'm just the opposite, I really can't stand the vocals on most death metal haha. But yea, death metal bands are becoming more technical, I do agree. DEP is kind of like a swiss army knife for me. They don't shine exceptionally at one thing, but whatever they do, they do pretty well IMO.

I second this. I would also recommend the 6the track off their new album titled Widower. It starts off very mellow and builds from there.

My vinyl just arrived and I've downloaded and listened a couple of times. Wow, what an album. It will take a lot of time to fully sink in but gee.... fkn wow.

I don't know what your trip is Redsky0000, but I strongly suspect your definition of 'melody' is vastly different from most. Most death metal is mediocre sludge. While the musicians may be highly talented, the musical content leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps they should be playing music written by professional composers, like lots of other talented musicians who work for orchestras and smaller ensembles. (David Harrington, of the Kronos Quartet, said years ago that composition is not his metre. Thank heavens for his good judgement and his ability to interpret composed music with such incredible verve and good taste).

While your examples are quite good, they are rather limited in melodious content. Death metal vocals is not what G.P. does imo. His vocals are a combination of extreme hardcore yelling and melodic pop 'singing', just in case you are unfamiliar with the term. Singing, that is. That takes far more talent, effort and taste than death metal growling on its own. Try it yourself and get back to us with the results. I know I can't do it successfully. Not even close, or far ;-)

The Dillinger Escape Plan are at the absolute pinnacle of current popular musical endeavour. Some people get it. Most don't. That's what it is to be a pioneer of the arts... or a pioneer of anything for that matter.
