there isnt really a major difference with all that is there?

It makes it a lot closer to the HD600 They use the same drivers, but the HD600's are just matched better. I would just go for the HD600, as I prefer its aesthetics, but that's just me.

I find the faux granite on the 600s just awful looking.

well, there is a pretty big range, since these are used headphones. The price varies according to mods, condition and the market at that time. For some reason these seem to go through cycles of supply and demand. I've been monitoring their price for a few years now and I've seen times where there were 4 or 5 for sale and no serious "have to have it" buyers and they ended up going for $120. I've also seen where there were 5 or 6 people trying to buy them and none up on the FS forum in a month or two and they ended up going for close to $200 with HD600 grills and HD650 cable.

The average price for good condition, non-modded is probably $150. Though fluctuations of supply and demand can make that vary either way by $20.

If you want the HD580 at reasonable price, you have to either stalk the FS forum or be very patient. Preferably both. Know what condition and type of mods you want and know what you want to spend and strike with a quickness as soon as you see them.

I've been second or third in line on HD580's several times. I've also been first and lost out when I made a reasonable offer, but had somebody throw down close to $200 because they had to have them.

x2 - I was so close several times. Stalk here, and eBay, and Craigslist. I finally got a pair off Craigslist for a real good price. Only because I was patient.

I've had my 580s about 9 years now (bought late 2001!) and they still look & sound great. Recently got the HD650 cable and would love the HD600 grills (for completion sake, naturally ), trouble is I haven't been able to find somewhere in the UK that sells them (haven't been looking that hard though).

Post a WTB in the FS forums and you will get some offers. I say 150.00 for unmodded is a fair price.

normally around $150 unmodded or $180 with 600 grills and 650 cable, but can be more or less depending on the market at the time.
