Is My iPhone 3G Unlocked?

I received a new iPhone 3G from my cousin who had originally intended to use it abroad. She purchased it without a contract from some random cell phone store. Is there a quick and easy way to tell if it's unlocked?

Don't have access to a T-Mobile sim card, or any sim card for that matter. The iPhone just says "No Sim Card Installed" or something to that effect.

There's nothing you can do without putting a sim card in it

Correct. When you insert a non-AT&T SIM, it will either boot up & work on the alternate provider's network, OR it will prompt you for an unlock code. The prompt means it's not unlocked & requires you to enter a code.

Probably the least expensive way of obtaining a T-Mobile SIM (other than finding a friend who already has T-Mobile service & borrowing their SIM), would be to purchase a T-Mobile prepaid phone for $10-15 on sale at Walgreens or similiar retailer. They come with a SIM in the package, and should work for this purpose. I think T-Mobile will charge you ~$35 for a SIM with a new service.

do u even have access to the main menu or are u stuck with the no sim messege screen

Without a sim card you will not make much use of the iPhone anyway.
Let alone get it up and running to check it it is unlocked or not.

Thanks for the input. I'm leaning toward selling it, in which case I'd want to accurately advertise as locked or unlocked.

probably worth finding a friend with a gsm phone or buying a disposable gsm phone to test it with then

Yes, I must agree. Whatever you do, it will not work without a sim card. You try it first. If it did not work, go to wherever you purchased it from. Then, if it still did not work, go with your plan.
