QLS QA 350 WAV: A new portable player with digital output - Page 5

Thx, maybe you didn't read the post above mine, I know the rudimentary DAC, LO analog digital stuff.  I have an Sflo2.  Maybe I'm not being clear:

1-Is the LO/Optical port both digital and analog?  Does it switch automaticall or do you select it output from a menu?

2-Does the LO and optical aspects bypass the internal amp on this player or is it like the Sflo2 where it still passes through an amp stage.

3-Can I get a pure signal from the DAC on this player or not?

@Anaxilus: i dont have any issue like card reader failing, but i dont know with other owners.

in front of the player, you will see 3 holes,

1 hole is for spdif (digital)

the second hole is for Line-Out and optical output (digital), they share the same hole, i think it is auto-detection, you dont need to change any option to choose which one you want to use.

the third hole is for analog/phone-out.

if you want to use the I2S, you need to open the casing.

one minus point from this player is... the digital output is always on, its mean even though u use phone-out, the digital output wont shut off (the red laser light from optical is always on too), it will deplete your battery faster

sorry, i am confuse about your question and how to answer it,

maybe i can give a simple explanation like this...

Analog Interface

- Phone Out (use internal amp and internal dac)

- Line Out (use internal dac and bypass internal amp, you must use external amp)

Digital Interface (Bypass Internal Amp and internal DAC)

- Optical Output

- Spdif Output

- USB output

- I2S output

- AES/EBU output

- maybe Firewire too

- others....

Teclast T51/Sflo2 has Phone out and Line out but doesnt have digital interface like Optical Output or others.

QLS-350 has Lineout, Phone out, Spdif out, Optical out, i2s output.

the right hole of T51 is line-out and it is same function with the middle hole of qls-350 (the only difference is the qls one can do dual-function as optical output too with auto-detection)

if you call the T51`s line-out is "a pure signal from the DAC" , then QLS-350 do the same thing

Okay, my apologies. But I really don't understand what you mean with question #3 in bold. Do you mean a pure digital signal? No DAC will output that, that is what they take in to convert to analog sound, unless you are using the DAC for s/pdif conversion. This device does indeed have a pure digital s/pdif out, as posted above, and the optical out is a pure digital signal as well. It would seem to feature every kind of output there is except USB.

What I mean for example is this.  I believe the Redwine iMod takes the analog signal straight from the DAC of the 5.5?  The Sflo2 does not and requires another amp stage, something about unbalancing the voltage I think.  I was wondering which strategy is employed by the 350.

I guess question 3 was an emphatic reiteration of puestion 2, lol

Thx guys.

So the LO of the 350 is akin to the Sflo2 LO and not an iMod then.

This player with 32GB flash memory and FLAC support could be a high end winner competing with HIFIMAN.

Something to ponder on for the manufacturer until they release next version called QA 250 or QA 450 or whatever.

^

and with a smaller size, it is bigger than hifiman...

Can this only be charged through the wall adapter?  I don't see a USB connector.

It comes with its own wall charger. It uses RC car battery (2 cell), so it's not difficult to find replacement battery. I asked Project86 about this size of compartment, I wish to fit a large battery. Have you read his review yet? It's a wonderful, detailed review. It should answer most of questions.

Yeah I read it before.  I think no usb charging might be the killer for me.  Carrying around an adapter is where I draw the line for my portability needs.  Really wanted to know how much better this thing is from LO than the Sflo2 LO.  I don't use HO so.

Do you have a Sflo2 yet? If so, a good news for you, the new firmware v2.3 smooths out its sound. ( I am listening to it now, I like it.) I begin to think Sflo2 maybe good enough for me. By the way, another US company will have modified version QA 350 in 3 weeks; I don't have the price, a few caps or chips upgrade usually raise the price $50 - $100 (at least, I hope.)

Smooths out the sound?  For HO only or LO also?  Didn't notice it needed smoothing from the LO.  If its an improvement I'll take it.  Scares me though I have never hooked up my Sflo to my PC yet lol.  I like to avoid unnecessary complications.

US version of the QA350?!  If it has a usb port added I will probably get one.  If you find a link before I do hook me up!

Thx.

About Sflo2, I have not try LO yet, the HO sounds more pleasant; before, both HO and LO had harsh tone to my ears.

The company (www.pacificvalve.us) has QA 550 (both regular and modified ). I emailed them about QA 350 a few days ago, I was told "Yes, in about 3 weeks." I don't have any details. The charger is 7.4 V, I wonder how much extra work to make it USB. I like the idea, USB. Let's inquire and see how it goes.

Thx for the link!  It looks like the 550 (unmodified) is 50% more expensive from them than direct from QLS.

I'll ask them about a usb version as well, maybe they run w/ it.
