Ultrasone HFI-780 Unboxking. - Page 4

I've just bought a HFI-780 and thinking that ill use them for quite sometime before i buy another set of headphones... I could use it with rock too,but nevertheless ill just give it a try and find out ... however , the main reason i wanted this headphones because i heard its good for electronica and maybe some games and movies... but i guess you cant have everything in one so probably ill have to find another headphone for rock music ... I've only heard the k701 and grado ms2i and ms1i... and i like the grado line .... but nevertheless ill note the hfi-680 as a option for my next set of cans... thanks for recommending :)

I think you would be more pleased with the Ultrasone HFI-680 for you music preference because that headphone is considered by most people as a better live sounding headphone and has a better overall soundstage. That is just what I have heard about it though, never had a chance to listen to it myself yet...

Well I ordered the Dr. DAC2 DX by Audiotrak on Ebay a few days ago. It was shipped fairly quick but now its stuck at the bloody customs here in Amsterdam waiting to get checked for any drugs and stuff -_-

So I realy have no idea when I will receive it in the mail unfortunately...

But I've read good things about it and because I still wanted to get a DAC for my monitors I chose this one. Also like the fact that it has 2 headphone outputs, one for low impedance headphones and one for the higher ones.

But ofcourse the headphone amp in this DAC cannot be compared with a stand-alone headphone amp in the same price range, its still quite good, but not as good as a stand-alone amp. Just made this decision because of the DAC that I needed.

But ye, I will keep you all informed of when I receive the DAC, I hope I will soon :P

Probably make a seperate unboxing thread of it aswell with some photos.

This headphone is defenitely good for electronica music, thats what I listen to most of the time and imo its perfect for that genre.

But I am sure that the 780 will be great for rock, or any other genre aswell, what I meant was just that the 680 would probably handle those genres a bit better than the 780 does, but that does not mean the 780 is bad for those. Not at all.

Though I wouldnt recommend you to get the 680 as your next set of cans, because they are quite similar to the 780 but with just a slight difference in the soundsignature. I would advice you to spend a bit more money on your next set so you will realy have a set of headphones that is an improvement to your current. The Grado line is indeed very good, atm I think that my next set of cans will be one from the Grado line aswell.

To everyone else, I recently received the Dr.DAC2 DX by Audiotrak that I use as DAC for my monitors and as amp for my headphone.

If you would like to see my unboxing of it check it here: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/496590/dr-dac2-dx-unboxing#post_6702450

I can't realy say anything about the soundquality yet besides that it sounds great so far and that it gives quite alot of extra detail to my music for both my monitors and headphone, but if you would like to read some proper reviews about it then you are better off cheking the internet for some reviews done by professionals, such as Mike from headfonia.com: http://www.headfonia.com/?p=4224

Darn. Scrivs, you did it again - made me want things. I was away for a few weeks, and you run off buying something sweet, should have known...

Very happy with both Hfi780 and c751 so far.

thinking of buying these headphones. will they sound great on an ipod or do i have to buy an amp for it.

They will sound good from an ipod, but will benefit a bit from an amp.  No need for an expensive one, a Fiio E7 will do

They do in fact sound great running straight out of an iPod, but I personally prefer to use an amp aswell. I have the FiiO E5 which does a great job, but I'd recommend getting the E7 if you're planning on getting one since it's newer and probably a better.

Never heard it myself though.

You could check out the Nuforce Icon Mobile since it is closer to your price range at $79. I've seen them go for roughly $60 in the for sale section. I think the Icon Mobile compliments the HFI-780's quite well. I feel it generally has a forward mirange, keeps the bass tight and punchy, and the treble is kept in check. To be honest, I'd venture to say the icon mobile could be seen as a poor man's (not literally) 2move. In the past when i had my d2000's, I paired them with the icon mobile and enjoyed it quite a bit. I then sold it and upgraded to a 2move, which seemed to share similar sonic qualities as the icon mobile but even more improved upon. I then left the head-fi scene for while and sold all my equipment sans my Westone 3. I just recently got back into the scene with the HFI-780 and decided that I'd save a bit of money on a amp/dac and go for the icon mobile. To be honest, I haven't had the desire to go with anything higher in price yet, and don't really see myself doing so with the HFI-780's. I think the icon mobile is that good of a match with them.

...but of course that may change in the future when I decide to go recable the 780's with either a JenaLabs or APS cable wink.gif

is the process of recabling the 780s hard or not? if so what are the steps to be able to do this.?

Typically most owners send their HFI-780's off to (in no particular order) ALO, APS, or Scott (warrior05) to get their headphones recabled. I also recall a handful of users recabling theirs themselves with a sennheisser hd650 cable, but I wouldn't know how difficult the process would be because I have no experience recabling headphones. If you're interested in getting a recable job, you should search around the forums to get a sense of what each cable has to offer sonically and the general price range of these recable jobs. I've currently got ~350 hours on my stock hfi-780's and am in love with them. However, I can definitely see myself getting them recabled in the future.beerchug.gif

I did a bunch of mods on my pair a while back, and was pretty proud of myself at the time normal_smile%20.gif .  Here are some links:

This should get you started.  Recabling isn't too bad a project if you can braid, solder, point a heat gun, drill, use a bit of glue, use a couple of zip ties.

Have fun!
