Barber's Adagio for Strings; Stunning!

Heard this for the first time about a month back; what an incredibly beautiful and emotive piece of music.

This is the type of classical I love; to me, a very similar feel to Gorecki's 3rd.

Any suggestions similar to the above?

Hello Kwitel,

Indeed Barber's Adagio is really breathtakingly beautiful and haunting, I am not sure about others that are similar, but I would highly suggest checking this cd out "Barber's Adagio / Munch, Galway, Boston SO Strings", if your a fanatic of Barber's Adagio, then this release is perfect, all different versions of the same piece, can never get enough! (also good recording quality) Take care,

I first heard this in the movie, Platoon. Truly amazing. Beethoven's 7th symphony, the second movement, gives me that same feeling of amazement and emotion. The byproduct is goosebumps

You have excellent taste!
I have the Guildhall String Ensemble version. Beautiful and inspiring music.
You may also like Gabriel's oboe by Ennio Morricone.
And of course Albinoni's Adagio.

Albinoni's Adagio, Pachelbel's Canon, the Air from Bach's Third Suite for Orchestra.

Of course, you should try other works by Barber. I recommend the Violin Concerto.

Try these for slow and emotive strings:

Adagietto, from Mahler's 5th
Alma's Theme, from Mahler's 6th
Beethoven's 9th symphony, 3rd movement
Beethoven's 3rd symphony, 2nd movement (Funeral March)

Schubert is the master of melody, try listening to his 13th and 14th string quartets.

Yup that is absolutely phenomenal. I also want to believe I first heard in that epic Platoon schene... Fitted like a glove!

almost as good as the valkyries march or what it was in apocalypse now

Funny, I've been listening to this too lately. Extremely beautiful.

If you want to check out a bit more Barber, all his best orchestral music is available on one CD conducted by Zinman. I especially like his first symphony and first Essay for Orchestra. Really moving stuff.

Amazon.com: Barber: Adagio; Symphony No. 1; The School for Scandal; Essays: Samuel Barber, David Zinman, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra: Music

There is a choral version of Barber's Adagio for Strings. I've heard the performance conducted by Spano on Telarc. It's good but somehow not as convincing as the original.
