Upgrading my IEM

Hi all folks, recently one of the cable on my lovely pair of Ety ER 6i loosened up and i had to send it back for repairs.

In the meantime i was wondering.. heck i should just upgrade to a new pair of IEMs as i've been using the ER 6i for quite some time.

So... any recommendations that will possibly fit in my budget of $300 USD?

Personally i tested out a pair of ER 4s and fell in love with it instantly although i find it a little too clinical other than that i'm so in love with the sound sig.

Any other suggestions? Please?

EDIT: using an iPhone 3GS as my source.

What type of music do you listen to? Would you still like the accurate, "light" sound or would you want something darker? Do you want more bass or... what?

Hi all, it's been a while since i post.

My preferences would still be the detailed sound of the Ety's however i just came back from my local dealer after having tested the Triple.Fi Pros, CK100, UM3x, ER-4p, ER-6i (as ref).

My conclusion is that the ER-6i sounds like a 10 year old radio compared to the rest.

The ER-4p sounds thin but very accurate and detailed however, the bass is almost non-existent although definitely better than the ER-6i. (Yes, i pushed it all the way in my ear canal)

The CK100 sounds a little muffled(?) compared to the ER-4p but it sounds much more natural-sounding which i like it! Bass wise, it definitely has the quality however quantity wise, it's still kinda light however, it fits nicely for all genres except for those rock, metal, (fill in any bass HEAVY genre) as it lacks the slam. Details wise, acceptable and CLOSE to the ER-4p but lacking by just a little here and there which isn't significant.

Regarding the UM3x, i find the mids kinda bloated although after listening through several tracks i find the mids to my liking however compared to the CK100, i still find the CK100 to be more "natural".. i wonder why?

Bass wise, it's there similar to the CK100 however my impression of it is blurred as i spent lesser time on the UM3x as the tips kept pushing it's way out of my ear canal as though as it's screaming "I DO NOT WANT TO BE IN YOU".

Finally down to the UE Triple.Fi pro, bass wise, you name it, it has it. (Slam, quantity etc.) However PERSONALLY, i find that the quality of the bass to be lacking as it sounds a little boomy to me (maybe i'm not used to the bass as i'm coming from the Etymotics). Vocals wise, they are clear, but sounds a little recessed maybe due to the mid-bass.

EDIT: If anything, i think a more accurate description will be veiled mids due to the mid-bass which in turn gave me the IMPRESSION that the quality of the bass isn't my cup of tea.

Lastly, the on pieces where there are vocals and slightly stronger bass at the same time, it sounds un-natural to me as it sounds as if the bass and vocals are coming out from different areas.

My final preferences will be CK100/UM3x>TF10pro>ER4>ER6i.

I can't really decide whether the CK100 or UM3x is more towards my liking as i didn't really spend much time on it as stated in the above paragraph.

If i were to listen to pieces that have bass instruments (e.g electric guitar etc.) The TF10pro will DEFINITELY win hands-down.... however when playing vocal-oriented pieces wise.... oh well.

My ideal preferences at this point of time will be the slam of the TF10pro, BASS and VOCAL QUALITY of the CK100 and hopefully the details of ER4 series.

May i know at this point of time what other earphones OTHER THAN CUSTOMS should i try as i've stated my impressions on some of the highly regarded earphones.

Advices or any of sorts will be highly appreciated, thanks folks!

e-Q7, gr8 and se530. If you enjoy the mids on the ck100 than get the ck100. From my experience with earphones, there is no other earphone that produce the mids found on the ck100.

if you like the ER4P sound, why not try the ER4S and pair them with a portable amp like the Headstage Arrow or even something as cheap and cheerful as a Fiio E5 or E1?

I;m using my ER4S with a Corda Headsix and they sound utterly beautiful.

Being a former ER-6i owner/lover, I've experienced almost the exact same scenario as you: they're great until you hear something with a little more "complete" sound, since they do lack in both bass and liveliness.

It seems to me that if you liked the UM3X, you might just love the Westone 3:
-mids aren't as "bloated" as the UM3X, yet still strong and smooth
-much more slam than the UM3X, while still being very tight (maybe not quite as tight as the UM3X, but very close)
-impressive speed for very demanding and aggressive music (read: metal)
-just as much detail as the UM3X (and if not, it's awfully close)

The bass may seem a bit heavy to you in comparison to the ER-6i, but you might just begin to love it in time. It took me a little while, but I don't think I could ever to back to enjoying the ER-6i like I used to. The bass of the W3 is strong, but it's not overpowering, and it doesn't smear itself all over the rest of the music like many other IEMs/canalphones with strong bass.

I initially purchased the UM3X, and just recently acquired the W3. While the two are obviously very similar, I think the W3 just slightly edges out the UM3X for my musical tastes.

I'm a metalhead and, in my experience, metal is a really difficult genre for IEMs to reproduce faithfully. I've been through several pairs of canalphones and IEMs (V-Moda Vibes, Ety ER-6i, Altec Lansing iM716, Sleek SA6, Klipsch Custom-2), and I've finally found a winner in Westone. Both the UM3X and the W3 handle metal extremely well, but they each have their strengths. The UM3X are perfect if I want to primarily listen to guitars, while the W3 are better if I want to feel the drums. In my opinion, IEMs have difficulty reproducing the feel of drums and bass, but the W3 have really turned that around. They're almost as impactful as my SR325is, which to me are the gold standard for listening to metal.

If you get the opportunity, audition a set of Westone 3 and see if they hit the sweet spot for you like they did for me.

Good luck with your search!
