I agree, but I have considered taking the same kind of photos myself when shipping a valuable item(s) overseas. But then I thought that it wouldn't really help, and might even seem suspicious!

Like Jaywalk, I still believe the box was damaged in transit.

I would assume it was opened and 'checked' and either the thing fell out or the customs guy took it. THOSE are the goniffs, not the delivery guys (usually).
Unfortunately, it's a distinct possibility. Never go uninsured if you can avoid it. IMO, the seller "cheaped out" and went "self-insured"; I think the seller has to pay up if no one else does, that's the price of doing business that way.

The seller's irresponsible shipping choices, and the ultimate result of this travesty should DEFINITELY be posted in the seller's feedback section, for better or worse (hopefully better).

Hm well if the thin tape was used to stick on the address and to diagonally seal the box, then I'd be 80% sure it was the sender at fault. I think you have the best idea though of getting estimates for shipping costs for the weight of the IEM you recieved, and a quote for if it were the weight of both. Hopefuly they don't just fall into a <1kg catagory and cost the same, and it should give you a definite answer as to whether they were both actully sent from the post office or not.
