These seem a heck of a lot more revealing of poor source files than my old pair for sure. I was listening to a lossless song from an album released only 3 years ago and it sounding like garbage. I don't know if I need to go clean out my ears or what. At random (like on the DT-880) the songs will go from sounding bad to great. Now I'm sure it's not the headphones fault or maybe I need to give my ears a rest. No, this isn't a complaint!
These definitely sound best on a neutral amp. Sounds better on my E9 than the Micro Amp (which I love for my K501).Haven't done any side by side comparisons yet though so I may be wrong.
Treble doesn't bother me at all on these yet. About the same as my DJ100. Sound clarity right now is still good, but not great. I think my DJ100 has the edge a little, but I'll need to burn these in more. KRK KNS-6400 sound a bit more clear too, but that's hardly a fair comparison since the M50 has all this extra bass.
The one thing I can say though is that the sound isn't all that engaging to me, but this is OK. Not sure why, and it's not because of it's mids.
BTW I've been doing cable swaps just for my own curiosity. I have Mogami, Belden, Monoprice and a Best Buy interconnects. Is it just me or does the Monoprice seem to add in a little extra bass? Probably just my imagination. Only with specific headphones did I feel I could hear a difference in any of them. Just a waste of time, but I do love the Belden 1192A cable I made.
I just tried some M50 pads with the foam removed. It reduces the bass a little and may make the mids a little more forward. The sound due to the extra bass often feels like it has a thin cover over it and holding back it's clearness. The HP541 and XB500 were like this, but 10X worse. With this is just barely noticeable and could be due to needing burn-in. I don't get why I never tried removing the foam with my old M50!! I don't suggest trying this unless you want to risk it. If you don't like it, you'll need new pads ($9 each).
Seems I like the large jack for the M50 on the E9 the most. Seems to increase the size of the soundstage. Not sure how it does this.
Now I wonder why more haven't suggested removing the foam backing on the M50 pads?!
