these LAMBDA PRO'S are on ebay currently at $255, but it says

"Thin mesh in one ear speaker is torn, but this is cosmetic only." -

can this be remedied by replacing the earpad

I'd go for the Signatures if I were you. They're my favorite Lambdas probably, especially with the SRM-T1 amp. The Lambda Pro and SR303/SR404 catch a lot of flak among the Lambdas, so I personally wouldn't buy one without an audition first. Good luck with your search. Btw, could you tell us your budget for the headphone/amp?

not sure about my budget... any thoughts on the 3 finds i posted on my last 2 posts?

For dynamic I would go with the d7000 or the t1. There the best all a rounders, but I havent heard the w5000 's yet though. I think the lavery dac at that price range would be better than the benchmark which can be a little to cold and analytical. You might want to look into a nos dac if you want a more laid back presentation like the isabellina. Stats are good but I dont know enough about them to recommend them. Try to get to a meet and listen to them first to see if they will work well with a variety of types of music to your satisfaction before jumping in stats head first, because they do have a different sound to them.

You should do some targeted searches and follow up reading in the Stax thread.

unfortunately that is not a possibility for me... hence the barrage of research and questions

Well, once you actually hear the difference between the various brands you might find out that what you prefer to hear isn't what seemed like what you liked best written. At least that was my experience after my first meet.

Khanate has a point. Given, the products you are interested in are top notch and very reliable, but by choosing those products you may be setting yourself up for regret in the future when you do get a chance to go to a meet. I did this exact thing, i got my hands on some very extraordinary merchandise, and for a few months i was having the time of life in this hobby.. Until i went to a meet and tried out other headphones, that was when i really started to truly find myself as a listener and even though stats are great, your ears may tell you otherwise.

As for what is in production or not - check out:

But yeah, both the SR-Lambda Pro and SRM-1/MK2 is out of production. That happened back in the 1980s some time.

Are you sure you're ready for a "dream" rig? How much equipment have you listened to and how much experience do you have with high-end audio?

This isn't a criticism - everyone starts with zero experience. The problem is that you can end up dropping a lot of cash on something that might not be your dream rig. Then you'll end up spending thousands chasing down what it is you really want. You won't find it by reading reviews and getting opinions.

If you're in the US, I recommend dropping some cash to attend CanJam. It's almost here. Then you can spend a weekend listening and really talking to people about the gear. It's a small investment considering what you could spend on equipment.

I second this. The patience of waiting now will save a lot of time in the future.

Thanks for all your feedback everyone, it was very helpful to go through this process and hear your perspectives. I think many of you are right. Its not a good idea for me to just take a chance on this. I'll have to find a way to do some demoing and really take my time with this.

I'm glad I started this thread and had this learning experience.

adios for now
