USB related question

Thread Starter
I'll start with the question:
Is it possible to add a separate power supply to a USB powered device?

I've narrowed my choices to two DACs, both USB powered (via B type usb connector).
I'm thinking about :
- bypassing the power pins on the cable connectors
- mounting an input connector, wired straight to the dac's PCB

Main question is:
Would a separate, well regulated, 5V power supply bring some benefits to the performance?
From what I've read USB power is not the cleanest .

Depending upon the USB chip, it may have a requirement to see the USB power to detect that it is attached to the host so you'll have to check to see what chip is being used.

It's possible. As for whether this is worth it is another story altogether. My opinion is that if you're willing to do that, just get a better DAC.
