SONY MDR-R10 - Page 4

I was surprised how many pairs of R10 were laying around the last Headfi meet in LA. So I finally heard the fabled cans. I think its a case over desire of reality. They are good (I don't know how they could be a case of "Love them or hate them," unless youre either deaf or crazy - come on. If you "hate them" you're hating the price and aura, not the sound). I enjoyed listening to them, but in no way did I think they were a couple of grand good. I really believe there is a wall with headphones that the RS1, HD650 (or 600) or good Denon's hit. I think the R10 are as good as, but not much better than those phones. But what will the new Senn 800s be selling for when they go out of production. That's the question.

Head-fi member Markl found his modded D5000 so good that he sold his MDR-R10
..or just marketing?
Since he started his own business based on these mods.

I don't know if this is a fact, but I've heard it from numerous people.

As for the MD5000s being better than the R10s, probably not even close. The LA7000s have been called the "second cousin" of the R10s, but not at their level, and they're a LOT better than MD5000s.

By no means are they bad cans, but keep in mind Mark is the only one claiming they're better than the R10s.
Yeah, a lot of us at the time thought perhaps he could be right, and boy wouldn't it be nice if he was. Then when I first heard the R10 I wondered what the hell he was smoking. I had the D5000 and modded it. It sounded great then but doesn't hold a candle to the top tier phones, nor does the LA7000. The Fostex driver just doesn't have the resolving ability; you could say it's very slow.

The same or less as they sell for new now. I can't imagine Sennheiser is going to stop production on the HD800 or should I say, a top-tier dynamic phone. They have had a very good response to the HD800, already selling about 5,000 of them in less than a year. They have committed to producing an annual supply of 5,000 and have not put a time frame on the model. I can see them releasing an even better, updated model in the future if the need arises but that wouldn't drive the price of the HD800 up, unless most people felt the newer model wasn't as good. And if the HD800 really took them 7 years to design and bring to market it could be a long time before something better replaces it, unless the update just involves some minor tweaks.

I got this same reply a couple of times in this thread so apparently it is just marketing

Yay, another thread on the relative value of the R10. I doubt that Sony will be making any price no object electronics any time soon. Especially after they failed miserably with the Qualia brand.
