Can someone please tell me what all the fuss is about with these headphones and why they command such a high price on the used marketplace.
Cheers.

About 1200 were made. AKA they are not exactly common.

They sound awesome. lots of people want them.

Supply and demand.

And they were expensive new back in the day...

Check out the reviews, the many threads in both this section and the high-end section, and maybe someone will have one at the national meet. I don't know if the sound is pleasing for everyone though. nikongod hit it on the dot with supply and demand for sure.

They are a very polarizing headphone. You either love them or hate them. They do certain things no other headphone does.

Biggie.

They are excellent closed headphones, among the best you will hear. Worth $6000 though? To me, not a chance but obviously some people feel they are. Even at the original new price of $2500 (I think that's approximately what they sold for) they are quite pricey. Then you have the complications of having two different versions, bass light or bass heavy. They don't sound great with all systems but when you find a good synergy it is a magical experience, especially for vocals.

They are easily the best closed headphones ever made, and some of the best headphones ever made in general. If you do a quick google search there is a page that shows you what materials went into the headphones, including how the drivers are made out of some odd bacteria, which is a one of a kind thing.

There were very few made, and they were very expensive when they were in production, so all of that combined is why they are so expensive, especially ones in good condition. The bass heavy version are really just the bass neutral version, and that specific version are the ones I've heard, and I loved them.

All of this is subjective as far as sound quality goes, there are people out there who hate them, and many who love them. Obviously at this price it's a "try before you buy" kind of thing.

They are not closed. They are ported.

a cd3k sells for $400, a R10 for $7000....7000/400, are they 17.5X better?

I'm talking about a totally cleaned cd3k, fully refurbished of course(no nasty black foam in the drivers enclosures)...and possibly recabled and/or w/ funky cups(possibly wooden, possibly R10 shaped).

Easily one of the best headphones ever IMO. I'm just hoping this isn't the new lobsterking alias pre sell thread.

They 17.5x rarer, not better though. It's more of a collector's item at this point than anything, but boy does that collector's item sound good.

I'd love to have a perfect condition CD3K though, then custom order some wood cups in R10 shape for them. Does anybody know if the CD3K had leather pads/headband like the R10? I never bothered to research them enough.

I just wonder if a fully fonctional cd3k sounds like a POS to a R10 owner...you know, like a DT770/Pro feels when you have a cd3k

Unfortunatly not,Sony cut corners with the CD3000 which was a shame because they are a great phone.

There is a marked difference between my stock pair and my Headphile pair with Apuresound recable.The CD3000 excell at newage type material(Enigma Era Enya etc)some say that they better the R10's with this type of music.( This is not me ranting but from those who have owned and compared the two}

Why Sony discontinued them?

Supply <-> Demand

Simple as that. Demand seems to be higher than units available to buy.
