Just not my day.

Thread Starter
Started out just like any normal day. Then, it all turned to ****. First, I get stuck on the ON Ramp to a major highway during lunch hour. The fuel pump on my 2000 Chevy truck, with just 130K mi on it, simply died. Then, I finally get home only to find out that the ground leg on my DT880-250 is intermittent at the connector. I’m not totally suffering since I can listen to my Grados (just not as comfy)
So, since I need to change the connector on my DT880, here’s the question:
1.Do I simply replace the connector?
2.Do I recable them as well? They are stock now.
3.Do I go XLR? That’s a good excuse to design a new amp.
4.If XLR, do I use two 3 pin connectors, one 4 or 5 pin?

What are my options, what would you do?

TIA for your suggestions.

Pete.

If you're positive that the trouble is at the connector I'd just replace that. Otherwise you'll just be without the phones for longer and there's nothing stopping you from further mods later on.

Unless you already have a balanced DAC/amp setup, I'd avoid cabling it with XLR connectors, then you'd be unable to use your headphones until you upgraded everything else (as balanced audio systems aren't exactly the epitome of cheap).

As n_maher said, you can always recable them later. Always beneficial to minimize the number of headaches you have at once.

You could always build an adapter to allow you to plug your balanced headphones into an amp which drives them from one end.

I would go 4-pin if you choose to do that.
