can i use these with my MAC? i have been reading mixed reports

You can use it with the ones that have MSC mode, and for the newer players at least it's as easy as going to settings and clicking automatic or MSC, as opposed to MTP. MTP is a transfer protocol used for Windows only.

I have been using an applescript to sync a Mac iTunes playlist to my Clip. It also works with a Fuze. It is not very fast, but it works good and is easier than copying files and folders. You will need to remove all of the files first since it won't ignore existing files.

Yes they do work fine, but I wouldn't recommend the auto-select mode as there has been issues that arise from using this mode. Select MSC and stick with it, also an important issue to note is that after every firmware upgrade, the unit will revert to auto-select mode, but knowing that it's easy to change it back in the settings before you connect again.
