If you aren't already aware, Monoprice.com might have been hacked recently: HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more!

I haven't ordered anything from them since December 21, 2009, and I just found 3 fraudulent charges.

I called my credit card company and had the account closed and am having them send me a new one. I have to fill out paperwork they are going to send about the fraudulent charges, and they will investigate, and (hopefully) give my money back. I called one of the vendors where a fraudulent charge had taken place, and guess what, they told me 3 more (this time unsuccessful) attempts to use the now closed account occurred this morning.

My Monoprice account only has orders after 9/1/09 still accessible, so if you ordered since then, I'd recommend looking through your credit card accounts carefully and decide for yourself whether to close the account and have them issue a new one, or just roll the dice and see what happens...

Would you mind telling how much the fraudulent charges were for, and who the payments were made to?

My CC number was stolen. I had fraudulent charges show up a few weeks ago. Thankfully, my bank caught it before any harm was done.

One of the charges was for over $4000. Another was for around $60.

On a side note, if you use PayPal at Monoprice (and you should), then your info should be safe. Although I use PayPal now, I used Monoprice way before they accepted PayPal, so my CC number was still there.

Thank goodness I used Paypal when I bought some cables from them recently! Nice cables for the money too...

This kind of thing is becoming more and more common, unfortunately. HDTracks recently had their whole CC database stolen...now this...I may start only using Paypal, and just pray THEY never get hacked...

Someone on another thread said it could be months before the particular chunk of data that may contain your credit card info gets sold, so just because you haven't seen a fraudulent charge on your credit card yet does not mean you are in the clear.

I am doubly glad now that I cancelled my credit card immediately after I noticed the fraudulent charges.

Monoprice also accepts Google Checkout in addition to PayPal.

All of my purchases from Monoprice have been with Google Checkout. Google Checkout is convenient (Google Checkout already has my address) and also means I only have to trust Google to keep the CC transaction secure rather than trusting many various merchants.

I was impressed that they shut their site down for any sales, were open and up front about it and had their own investigators as well as official ones look into the actions. I am so happy they are back up and running, only not accepting cc, I only use paypal anyway.

Not good. I made a purchase not long ago. My CC company (Citibank) has a great utility to generate a virtual account number. By default the virtual account expires after 60 days but you have the option to specify the expiration date and a purchase limit. I always use virtual numbers when making a purchase online or by phone.

I just got a call from American Express asking to verify a possible fraudulent charge made a few minutes ago. It was for $150 and it was declined. They canceled my card and are sending me a new one.

Edit: here's the charge: 03/19/10: $150, ZYNGA GAME NETWORK, INC

What's strange is that according to my bank statements and emails, I made 3 purchases with Monoprice. The first was 3 years ago and was through PayPal. The second two were last year and were through my debit card. I haven't used my American Express card for anything through Monoprice, ever.. Maybe it's a coincidence?

I feel you.. Someone got my CC number online.. Not sure how.. Ran up a debt of over 1,000.. They are sneaky though.. Usually they charge anywhere from 9.95 to 29.95, & when you charge a lot, these get over looked on your bank statement.. I caught wind, when I was putting in money, not buying much, & noticed my account was shrinking. I did some research, & found over 1,100 worth of BS.. Things I never order. I must have had 20 subscriptions to websites.. & when I called the number they could never give me my account number or any other info.. Not my home address.. All they had was a email address I seldom used.. It was fraud.. I contacted my bank.. They rein burst me immediately while they investigated. They sided in my favor & I got to keep the money that was stolen from me.. people were selling my CC number & making bogus charges.. I'd love to spend 5 minutes alone with them & a base ball bat..

Rob, have your PayPal tied to an account you only use for PayPal transactions and where you keep a low balance. This way you minimize your loses, also get a "key" from PayPal. Cheers and good luck.
