iPhone + LOD + calls = any simple solutions?

I listen to my iPhone (3Gs) via LOD/amp, and will probably prefer this setup even more once I upgrade my current amp. I had to give up in-line ipod control functions, but this became a non-issue when I discovered the GlovePod cydia app. The only issue I still have is when I receive calls I must pull out my iPhone & remove one IEM to take the call. I did some testing and concluded that my iPhone works as following:

iPhone using LOD only
-music via LOD
-calls via built-in speakers/mic
iPhone using LOD and headphone out
-music via LOD
-calls via iphone headset or headphones+built-in mic

my ideal situation -- music and call audio via LOD
-for calling/outgoing audio I'd use a compatible iphone headset or (empty) mic adapter like the Monster iSoniTalk or Griffin SmartTalk purely for the mic function (thus won't require me to remove my IEMs).
-is there any simple way to get this to work? I don't want to have to bother with taking my iPhone out of my pocket nor removing my IEMs everytime I just want to take a call.
why can't I just take out one of my IEMs? --- cuz I'd rather not

I looked back 15 pages and did a quick search, but couldn't find any solutions which weren't >2yrs old nor even directly applicable to my problem, so I figured I'd start a new thread on this issue.

I don't know if the products you linked will do what you want (allow you to connect and use a mic through the 3.5mm jack while listening to your headphone through the LOD/amp).

I've always kind of wondered why nobody has designed an iPhone specific amp that passes the fourth channel/mic on the integrated headsets (or maybe even includes a preamp?). I don't know if there's an channel for the mic on the dock connector, but you would think so...

the iphone has been out for 3 years, so it makes me speculate that there is none. because of my obstinance to take my IEMs out of my ears, seems my only feasible way to deal this situation afterall is just:

-music via LOD
-calls: take iphone out, unplug IEMs from LOD and transfer to headphone out =/

I can't be the only one who's come across this issue. If you have another way you deal with it, please share

what about bluetooth headset that act as an IEM and phone mic. I think that's the only solution. Look around the apple site for bluetooth IEMs.

The dock doesn't provide access to the microphone. I just use my jh13s with a smarttalk cable connected to the headphone out.

I'm in the same boat and thinking of getting a free phone and adding another line just for phone calls. I then can create a family plan and get an 18% discount while sharing my minutes between the two phones. Not sure if this is worth it though.

how does a 2nd phone help? You'd still have to take your iems out, put the phone to your ear, etc.

I pause my ipod classic, take out my phone, take one earphone out of one ear and talk. Simple enough for me. =\

I just had an idea.... I'm going to try using a (1) female -> (2) male 3.5mm splitter, with one going to LOD and other to headphone out!! based on the testing I mentioned in the first post, when both are plugged in, the iphone should normally route my music out via the LOD, but then switch output to the headphone-out for calls; so in theory this should work

here's a quick schematic I put together on paint to show what I'm thinking of trying ^^

of course I'll still need to pull my iphone out to use the built-in mic, but nonetheless I rejoice at having possibly found a solution that doesn't require removing my IEMs.... or do I? hmm I'm wondering if someone more search savvy than me can help me find a splitter as described above, but with 4-pole pin instead of the standard 3-pole pin?

//edit: woot 100th post ^^

//edit2: sorry i should clarify: the arrows indicate male ends, they aren't necessarily directional

Lol - your absolutely right. I must have been tired when I read the original post. That made abolutely no sense.

I'm not a rocket scientist but there seems to be a flaw in your design process. You have the LOD going into your amp and the headphone jack going into your amp. How is that possible? Or did I miss something.

Never mind I see what you're trying to do. Not sure it's possible unless you do DIY cable.

This seems to be the simplest and logical solution to me. If using an amp your gonna have to deal with some of the mishaps that come with it to maintain the value of using one IMO. Splitting the headphone cable will make the whole rig more complicated and not justify using an amp in the first place to me. Good luck to you and I hope you find a solution to your needs.

Do!

To me, the value of hte iphone/jh13 combination is you get spectacular results simply. Then you can use an amp or whatever elsewhere for greater sound quality at the expense of convenience.

sorry i should clarify: the arrows indicate male ends, they aren't necessarily directional

considering the direction of source -> earphones, i guess it's more appropriate to consider the F->(2)M more so a "joiner" rather than a "splitter"

also, by DIY cable do you mean the 4-pole F->2M splitter? because as I linked above, I've already found a 3-pole one that could feasibly work (no mic tho) if no one can help me find a 4-pole one anywhere online.

Hey everyone, I have started researching this as well, and I was under the impression that using one of these:

ALO Audio

would allow you to set up as follow: Iphone3gs>LOD>amp>IEMS...and still maintain the ability to answer calls as you normally would when just using the headphone jack plain vanilla with iems... is this not the case?

So, when a call comes in, I would answer it, listen to the caller in my iems without taking them out (like I do right now), and speak into the built in-mic at the bottom of the phone to converse. Does this situation not happen when using LOD and an amp with iphone? Thanks for the replies and cheers.
