XLR interconnects for my Little Dot DAC_I and MKII+

SPC wire

Balanced HD650 cable, 4-pin XLR

Cardas connectors

Mogami mini quad

Nylon multifilament

Melted them just a bit. I filled them in with hot glue, forgot to take a pic.

XLR 4-pin to 1/4 TRS adaptor

Next I want to skip everything else and jump head first and build a Beta22 and Buffalo32.

LOL.

Very nice job, and great foresight shown to take pictures as you worked. I still haven't done that. I get way too into the building process to remember to take pictures until I am done.

Oh, and is that tinned copper braiding in your first few pics? Did you scrap plans to use it as shielding?

Cables seem to be "the gateway" into DIY projects. I started off with a DIY balanced cable for my K702's. Now I am in the middle of a CK2III/gamma2 build, and have mouser BOM's for a balanced M^3, and balanced beta22/EHHA/o22.

Its a slippery slope...

I always take my cell phone out of my pocket when I work and place it on the table. So it reminded me to take a few shots while I was working on it.

Yeah I was going to use it as shielding and tie it to pin 1. I know for the B22 and Buffalo it is ideal but I wasn't sure with the LD amp and dac. So I just left it out.

if this is for dac -> amp it needs to be 3 wires not 2 balanced is 3 wires not really balanced in that aspect

Are you serious? I thought it was 2 wires per channel and the 3rd(pin 1) is just chassis ground?

Your thinking is correct, you don't need all three. To be proper you should connect the shield wire, but functionally it's fine without it.

That's a very comprehensive set of photos detailing the different steps. Good work.

I too thought the same. But I think it may have to do something with my being a noob when it comes to balanced.

The commercial balanced cables I own only have the ground connected only on one end as a shield. No signal is transmitted over pin 1. However, there was previously some discussion about connecting balanced gear and having the ground connected between devices. Personally I'm not going to worry unless I get problems with hum, which I've not encountered with any balanced gear so far.
