I don't think it's ridiculous or pointless. My wife has an iTouch and it works very well for her, but it wouldn't suit me at all. I want to be able to read PDF files and other documents easily on the go. I can't do that with a iTouch, the screen is too small. I can't easily read PDF files on a netbook- it's a clunky interface for doing that, and the screen is too small. Plus, annotating PDF files is a pain in the butt without a touchscreen- esp. if I want to be able to draw little diagrams. Additionally, I think most netbooks are overrated. Their keyboards are usually totally crappy. They're either grossly underpowered, or they cost as much as a full sized low-end notebook computer, so why bother? Plus, I've already got two Macbook Pros.

Underpowered - not really, if you are comparing it to a Kindle / Touch or the iPad. Versus a full blown laptop? Then yes, I agree.
Crappy keyboard - I agree, in some cases. The 7 inch / 9 inch netbooks were generally bad, but no so much with the slightly larger 10 inch ones. that one inch makes a big difference.
Cost - Only if you avoid sales. Get a 10 inch during a sale and you might pay $200, right now.
I also don't agree with your comment on a netbook not being useful as a PDF reader (or, to extend that out, as an eBook reader). I have a DELL Mini 10v and that was the main reason why I bought it. Nice big screen, and the ability to view any format under the sun. For my purposes, it's a great tool.
I am watching the iPad closely as it, or one of its Tablet competitors, might be my next gen netbook replacement. But I don't see that happening, right now.
