is that just very a misinformed advice, or could that possibly be breaking your agenda to say that USB sucks jitter and power-wise? that seems highly "beezar" to me

Blindly repeating other people words does not make something true. USB and SPDIF *both* can suck on jitter. USB can have power issues. And btw, everything shares ground - unless you're on the moon.

My advice to the OP was to try something that do both line and USB power and make the informed choice for themselves.

And what does rolling op-amps have to do with this thread?

Who knows. Sounds like he enjoys arguing for the sake of arguing.

a little bump: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f133/p...2/#post6500985

but yes, the USB power is very high quality! everyone's wrong on that matter...who needs more than 640kb anyway.

jkeny is not exactly a n00b, and he's not selling USB DAC's

All you did was prove this statement. Cleaner supply is better. Happy? Nothing I didn't know already (especially for the clock).

And have you ever actually tried to design a DAC? On a board that is 2"x1"? Maybe then you'll learn about the compromises that happen, as you have to rip out your ideas to make it fit on the board.

Easier to critique than to do.

the OP was asking whether USB power was clean or just very dirty...he wasn't asking for SQ compromises, otherwise he'd use this: DealExtreme: C-Media CM108 Virtual 7.1-Surround USB 2.0 External Sound Card

So stop posting links to threads linking power quality to sound quality.

Every design is a compromise. It is as easy to find faults with a $1000 unit as a $30 one.

This thread sucks, lol.

Also, I'm finding my Dell XPS420 improves significantly as a USB transport when plugged in to my Belkin PureAV power filter. Also a slight improvement with my Monster triple-shielded USB cable, too. *casts Fire Shield on self*

humm? you don't need to spend $1K to get a standalone discrete linear PSU and have a galvanically isolated connection between the computer and the external DAC...USB and firewire are doomed to fail, due to their shared ground...and using the computer 5V power to feed the analog circuits is just a terrible idea.

now for $10, it's hard to beat! but many S/PDIF external DAC's can be fed w/ a proper linear PSU(V-DAC, all the Firestone Audio units, etc etc) and cost way less than $300 new...anyway, keep thinking what you want..I think the OP has a rough idea of how "clean" the USB power is now.
