Andrew Lloyd Webber's newest play just opened in London. It will arrive on Broadway in October, 2010. NPR : National Public Radio : News & Analysis, World, US, Music & Arts : NPR has a link to the new theme song for it.

Interesting. Phantom of the Opera is pretty much the only real great thing he have produced

^^ I take issue with that. Saying so, I'd not want to see a musical based solely on his work. Phantom 2 never made it to the novels.

I heard about this on the weekend. I think it will fail.

Reviews seem to be mixed so far, with most citing the book as being weak. All seem to agree that it is not as good as the original which would be a major feat to accomplish. One of the complaints is that it is not as dark as the original. There is so much expectation for this it is bound to disappoint.

I agree that this will be the hardest thing for it to overcome.

Yuppers which is why I thought it will fail. If you did make it as dark then people would claim it's trying to be the first and therefore not creative or original. You're screwed both ways .

Well, I don't think it will fail. It just won't be the monster hit that the original was. Actually, what they should have done is made it even darker than the original. It is a horror story after all. The Phantom has somehow become a romantic tragic figure, made even worse in the movie version of the musical.
