Explore more music

Although a music lover from a young age I just realized how narrow is my knowledge about good music. The truth is I was at the bus stop thinking how could I spend money for some headphones, amp and so on while being broke and with an el cheap Phillips in-ear kit and then I saw my music collection and realized that I've lost site of what really makes the experience, it's the music it self.

My music collection is tiny and I just recently got into classical music, which I actually know nothing about and would like to learn and explore. However, I would like to also learn more about the same style as Pink Floyd (all albums), Radiohead(Bends and a couple more) and so on as well as Rock in general.

So yeah, I would like to start listening to more classical content (introduction - albums) and learn more about Rock in general (what are the must listen albums - classics, and what do you think I would like listening)

Every suggestion counts.

-Thanks in advance

Welcome to the club, I have just been going through the same process myself. I decided to do a little more branching at the beginning though. I am searching across multiple genres before I start focusing on one genre.

If you like Classical, the next thing to check out, IMO, is jazz and blues. Good luck on your adventures.

I am downloading the image right now and will try to check at least a song from each album.

Music Map seems to be on the point.

I would not stop you from listening classic music but the only thing i know about music is:
The classic music according to me is the one which forces me to close my eyes and generate a feeling in me to dance
Do not specify your feeling to any type at least in music, let your heart decide this

The thing is, I joined head-fi by chance and got to learn a lot about gear but never really searched about the music a bit more than I already did, I just kept an unending spiral of listening to the same albums and songs. As such I lost sight of whats really important to have a joyful experience. I do like Jazz and Classical music for relaxation and Rock while working being in a mood (whatever it is).

So yeah thats why I opened this thread and even if little by now, all of the answers where straight to the point (for Rock at least :P)

I could dream for a super setup that I can't possibly afford or I could take action and learn more about music and when funds allow it enjoy it more.

if you like Radiohead -related/similar music I recommend the music forum of ateaseweb.com: Board Message I've been there for years! There's always good discussion/recommendations on lots of interesting music from people who like Radiohead.

for the Classical Music I could give you a long list of basic recordings, but instead I'll direct you here: The 100 Greatest Classical Recordings of All Time(Ò³ 1) - ¾«»ªÇø - ¶ú»ú¾ãÀÖ²¿ÂÛ̳ ¶ú»ú,¶úÈû,¶ú·Å,¶ú»úÂÛ̳,ÒôÀÖ,ÒôÏì - Powered by Discuz! Archiver it's Gramophone Magazine's '100 Greatest Classical Recordings of all Time'. While the list is pretty fallible on closer inspection, it's a good place to start. Once you have 20 recordings of the same piece you can start debating wether or not the one there is 'the greatest'.

Good on you for being so open about yourself. This is a good place to begin.

I spent my youth exploring a limited range of genres (metal, a little classical and Floyd, basically). I spent a large portion of my small income on buying music, a lot of which disappointed me and I could not live with in the long term. This experience taught me to become more discerning in my choices and also to expand my tastes.

My philosophy now is to seek out the best of ALL types of music; to listen intently to everything I come across, by accident or by design, and to filter out the gems (few) from the mediocre (most). That's not to say I have a vast collection of the most varied styles; I'm still working on that and will be until the day I die. It's a life long journey and one that is always fulfilling but always holds a promise of something new and amazing just around the corner...

Good luck on your journey. Your current selection indicates that you are starting from a sound base of good taste. Remember to always keep an open mind (and ear!), and you will be constantly rewarded for your efforts. Maintaining good taste always requires some effort; nothing great is achieved or experienced to the fullest without mindful application.

And don't forget to look back into musical history whilst looking forward. The world is open wide since the internet has in recent times made almost everything available to most everyone in the modern world. Ad Libitum!

I think a good hifi helps to broaden your taste in music. You begin to appreciate musicianship more and how good some recordings are. With a rubbish hifi you are just listening to the music, so you want to appreciate the tune more. Hence many such hifis are boomboxes which emphasise bass rhythm to give it a strong beat.

I tried and failed in going "All styles have gems" my ears seem to be snobby at times. What I mean is, I tried hip hop, pop, Hit bands/songs but they always feel the same to me, trashy and made from money and not soul. I don't say people shouldn't listen to this kinds it's just I can't. Rock has become my base from a very young age, from Queen to Led Zeppelin to The Doors and so on, I can't change that.

I am just rebuilding my whole music library because my father decided to format my music external hard drive for his "precious" files. So starting from scratch I refilter everything I owned and keep the ones I really enjoy and check new bands, like "The Verve".

Keep it up!

I read the first two posts in the thread. I'm planning on reading all 13, but first I gotta say I'm in the same boat as the OP. I listen to a lot of old school hip hop (omg, Blackstar? anybody?) and I guess second on my list is blues, but I don't got nearly enough blues or rock or classical albums. I got two rock albums I think, probably 10-20 blues, and NO classical. I need to up my weight guys! I got some decent gear and I want to listen to great music on them. I'm just a hip-hop head. I love all music though. So I'm gonna take a look at that "road map" thing, and others. Thanks for a great thread.

Some quick recommendations.

Pink Floyd > King Crimson (In the Court of the Crimson King)
Rock > TV on the Radio (Dear Science) and The Flaming Lips (The Soft Bulletin)

Although you seem to not enjoy other genres so much, I think you should continue to give them a chance every once in a while, because I feel that many genres have a lot to offer.
