UMPC coming rapidly

UMPC - Ultra mobile PC are going to be the thing in 2010. All you will need is a portable dac/amp and you will have a great portable music source. Many run windows so Mediamonkey, Foobar etc running flac is just around the corner for us. Plus G3, Wifi, bluetooth etc, etc...

Should be fun and the death of iPOD

The Viliv and Archos product look very promising.

Anyone have one of these yet?

unless it can last 12hours of audio playback in a single battery charge or it won't affect the sales of ipods at all.
looks interesting though, but i fear the audio will lag if we run some another program while playing music..

The size is still a problem and the fact that to use them, you often have to keep the screen open or on. tablets might work, but I honestly doubt they'll catch on in the mainstream for music playback. Hell, even I wouldn't bother with on if I want to NOT have to carry a backpack around just for music. That, and connect DAC's etc, and you have next to no battery life at all. And have to use Windows.

I plan on using one in my car as several products double as a GPS. Power won't be a problem in that environment. External DAC and then analogue into the head unit.

The Viliv S5 is good for 6-8 hours...

I have a Gigabyte M704 tablet slider plus a LG HS101 LED projector as an ultra-portable HTPC solution, used mostly for vacationing. While this works fine for its intended purpose, I second shigzeo's opinion that those devices are still far from competing with iPods for music playback on the go. Plus they'll have to adapt all the software UIs, just try using Mediamonkey on a 7" screen (or less) and you'll know what I mean.

Stoutblock, you can't be serious, with comments like.

Holy crap how big are your pockets, I took a trip across to 'Pocketables Products'.

The Viliv has a 10" screen and the Archos as a 9" screen, now correct me if I'm wrong but neither of them could even vaguely be described as pocketable?

Not even the largest pocket of my cargo pants would accommodate any of them, Dude I'm sticking with my IPOD nano.

Least I won't have to pay out for weekly visits to the Chiropractor as my spine crumbles under the weight of having to carry a 2010 UMPC and DAC around.

For pure portability reasons, UMPCs aren't replacing anything, maybe except netbooks.

They won't even be the "death" of the iPad, much less than the iPod!

Yeah you guys are right. I'm just loaded rockbox on my iPOD 5 and now I'm moving about 30% of my FLAC files over to it. should work in the car and on the plane just fine until tech steps up a little more...

Thanks for drilling me!
