I'm surprised there isn't an impressions thread going yet, so I decided to start one myself.

Just got in. Great time.

I'll post impressions later. Pictures probably to come tomorrow.

definitely a good meet -- my hat is off to our wonderful organizer, emooze. the hilton was a great spot (only 3 mi from my house!).

the rigs were high caliber across the board, including an amazing number of DIY amps with incredible build quality -- particularly n_maher's electrostatic rig and nikongod and tintin47's dynamic rigs.

'stats were in amazing supply with at least seven different stax rigs. there were a couple of omegas and a couple of sr-404les on the scene. i must admit that the sr-404le made my sr-404 look a bit feeble.

on the dynamic side, there were balanced and unbalanced versions of the hd800 on site -- i was particularly impressed with towert7's gs-1/hd800 combo. nikongod's diy tube-based amp with balanced hd800 threw off an amazingly huge sound.

hifiman's planar speakers were also on site -- tintin47's diy rig with the hifiman planars sounded sweet!

beverages were a plenty and a good time was had by all!

Yup, great meet and great job by Emooze organizing it.

I'm home now but too tired to upload pics tonight. Also, I'm too busy enjoying the Pico Slim, more details of that as well since it was one of the rigs that I spent a great deal of time with at the meet.

You mean there actually is a Pico Slim?

It was great to finally go to another MA/NE head-fi meet. I think it's been at least 2 years since a full scale one. Great work Emooze! It was a huge success. The location was super easy to get to (no Boston traffic for me), and the location itself was very nice. The staff there did everything to make it as nice as possible. Thanks Emooze!

Now onto some gear.

Nate's unique build of Justin's Blue Hawaii: This was the smoothest, most laid back, Omega 2 setup I have heard to date. I still think I'm a SS amp guy though, even for the O2.

Speaking of the O2, wow! These are on my wishlist. I seriously need to compare them side by side with my HE60. I'm not sure which I will prefer, but I think I've made up my mind to keep the HE60 until I've at least compared the 2 for a good while. I heard them out of the Stax tube amp and the Woo Audio WES. Both sounded quite nice. Very cool!

You know, I laugh at this, but I've spent so much money upgrading components, and then I tried a Mapletree Ear + Grado SR325 setup today and was very impressed with the instrumental songs it was playing. You sure can have great sound without spending an arm and a leg!

I was happy to hear the AT M50. They do have a mid bass bump which makes them sound more like a movie theater. Interesting little things!
I also tried some JVC's, which I'm told sell for ~40$us. Very nice for the price. 40$ headphones shouldn't have that much soundstage, but they sure did.

I wasn't blown away by the Beyer T1. They seemed like a more refined DT880, but they didn't strike me as very involving from the short listening I did. Thankfully though, they didn't have sibilance like the HD800's have for me.

The HE-5 are still not my cup of tea. There is a peak in the upper mids that makes vocals sibilant for me (more so than the HD800).

Lots of various Stax 404's. They sounded very nice. A full bodied mid range, though not as expansive as some of their more expensive brethren.

Also tried the Take-T ear speakers. I didn't like these.

My HD800. I wasn't too crazy about these. There certainly is a sibilance to the vocals that I just can't get past. I'm also getting a little bored with the 'semi-speaker' presentation. If I'm listening to headphones, I want them to sound like headphones.

My HE60. Someone was playing some pink floyd, and when that money song came on the ripping of the paper totally freaked me out. It sounded like it was coming from 10 feet away, but as pinpoint as could be. SO COOL! I'll have to listen to this when I set them back up.

Certainly great setups at this meet, and what a wide variety.

I was shocked at the amount of people who brought computers this time. Back 3 years or so ago I would have been one of just a very few to bring a computer, and now at least half the setups were computer based. Computer as source sure has caught on!

Great times.

I will attest to that, did a little mini-comparison of the Shadow, Pico Slim and TTVJ slim and I have to say I liked the TTVJ slightly more than the Pico, crisper, more dynamic, but IO know other's at the meet gave the Pico the edge especially with vocals, either way, they are all great amps.

The meet it self was cool, spent more time than I had planned just because the company and conversation was nice and everyone had such cool toys. HeadDirect had a nice setup, the HiFiMan is a cool piece of equipment, but not cheap. Really nice sound especially with the amp module. They also had a nice small tube headphone amp, EF5 Headphone amplifier, that for $400 sounded awesome with the JH13s. People with better ears than I will give some more impressions I am sure, but it was a great meet.

this was a great meet - such growth since last year with about 7 of us

thanks to emooze for organizing this

I'll try and post some pics and impressions

early ones:

Ari's amp was uber impressive - sounded like a more refined single power to me.

simple tube-based grado systems (mapletree/325; Ian's Denon/HF-2/Nate-built Millet) give a heck of a bang for the buck compared to high end systems

plenty of other great DIY amps (beta 22, nate's blue hawaii, the woo) and cans like the PS-1, stax omega, AKG k1000, HD 800, all things planar, etc.

plenty of computers and particularly netbooks

Duggah's electro-piezo cans were interesting. Aggressive highs and scooped mids but nice headstage and tight bass - a very different presentation than dyanmics or stats.

confirmed i really don't like ultrasone nor am i a huge fan of the grado RS-1 and the AKG 1000 is nice but not anything that truly blows me away

now for the heresy:

some of the planars in general sound if not sibilant, then something approaching having a glare to them.

meanwhile, an AKG 701 through a TTVJ large tube amp sounded great to my years as did the HD-800

go figure

Great meet and thank you for organizing it Emooze and everyone for attending. I didn't get to listen to much other than electrostats but enjoyed all the setups I heard.

And of course numbs and Al for the exceptional refreshments

My pleasure to organize, great to see such an awesome turnout. Thanks to Voltron and JP for buying the beer, Nankai for the water and all the guys that got there before me and reorganized the room. But big thanks to everyone just for showing up. I didn't do so bad for my first try, right?

Amazing to see such a high ratio of stats to dynamic cans. Along with a good mix of DIY stuff.

I got a little buzzed around lunchtime so my memory is a little fuzzy but:
HD800's were amazing, both stock and balanced. I really can't describe them beyond that, they just amazed me.

ESW9's blew me away that something designed that small and for portable use can sound that good.

The K1000's were a first for me and I can really understand why they have a reputation. Really felt like near-field speakers.

Yuin OK1's were STUNNING. I can't understand how earbuds can sound that good.

The few different flavors of the HE-5 that were present are very nice. Really enjoyed the ones Nankai handed me to try on my M3 along with tintin's on his b22.

Duggeh's T2 was exceptional, really enjoyed Shostakovitch on them.

Stretch's O2's on the stax amp were really good, a step up from lambdas. Then he set up the WES which was even better. Missed out on trying them on n_maher's blue hawaii but got to try them on both SS and hybrid eXStatA's present. Really can't beat that design for the price.

I know I'm forgetting a lot but it'll come to me in due time.

He means the He-5 headphones.
It was great meeting everyone there, and enjoying a lot of great cans as well! Honestly, every headphone I got to listen to was just wonderful. It was also nice to see the sweet headphone stands people had, and the weapons boxes for the headphones as well haha

Here are a few pictures I uploaded to photobucket. I have a bunch more that I want to compress/resize tomorrow so flickr doesn't yell at me.
