Has anyone heard either the 600 or 650 with closed back? Headphile makes wooden closed backs for them and I just wondered if anyone had heard them. After a few other upgrades to my stereo I'm planning on a second pair of headphones and the HD-650 is one of the contestants.

About 4 years ago I had a HeadPhile woodied HD650 in the hope that it would produce a truely closed headphone with the HD650 sound but it didn't really. It wasn't properly closed so still alot of leakage and also the sound changed. It has been so long now though that I can't really comment on what happened to the sound. It didn't necesarily change to the worse as preferences differ but it certainly changed. If he hasn't changed his pictures on the site it is the bubinga one on the matching stand that was mine.

I have experimented with closed Grados only to experience equally disappointing results.

The HD 600 and 650 are designed as open headphones - closing them up would produce something horrible.
Closed headphones have to be designed from the start as closed - it's a lot more than just closing the back.
I mentioned to Sennheiser ages ago about the need for closed headphones of the quality of the HD 600 or better - I just hope they are working on it.

Yeah I don't see how Headphile's woodie can work. Just having something outside open headphone and you get awkward reflections. I imagine closing a open headphone will just make it sound like a can.
that was always what I had thought and why i figured these were the type of responses I'd get. I didn't really think you could just close and open headphone and call it good. Oh well regardless my next pair of headphones will probly be some (OPEN haha) HD650s, or Grado RS2is
