Headphones with the best bass and clarity? - Page 2

The OP asked about bass without sacrificing clarity. The D2000 isn't even in the same game in regards to clarity, even with markl mods. They got good bass, they just sacrifice clarity to get it.

Hopefully not equating to me. My favorite of my 20+ is my SA5000. It is in my avatar with my K701, and Denon D7000. My DT880 pro was to the side with the T50RP with newer pads, and 7509HD.

This thread will be interesting since the OP has the HD800.

He may mean he wants a headphone with more of a bass feel. Like a sub woofer. The biggest difference I hear from my hi-fidelity headphones to cheap bassy headphones is they play a bass tone, not a bass vibration. I prefer the balanced bass that hi-fi headphones have, but when it comes to playing music in a car, for example, theres nothing like having 4 10" subs. :P

Not to recommend them, but I have heard the Dr. Dre beats for about 15 mins and they have a sub-bass feel. But overall they are bad headphones... (muddy, bad soundstage, etc.) Just an example.

Well, of all headphones I've heard over the past few years, there's only a few that qualifies, namely the Grado PS-1, driven by a good discrete or hydrid amp, it's mandatory to use these kind of amps because the bass can be bloated if under driven with an amp that doesn't have the proper topology (Hated the M3/PS-1 pairing.. somewhat limited even with bass boost, which sounded wrong to me) to provide textured rich controlled bass.

The quality, i.e bottomless, powerful bass is really what makes the PS-1 shine, the inviting mids and delicate highs are just icing on the cake. I won't go into details as I've only heard them a couple of times, I never owned a pair.

Sadly, it's availability is quite low as most owners seems to keep/using them, there wasn't that much pairs for sale on the market in '09/'10.

Either these or Stax Omega II MKI/KGSS. I have never heard the Audio Technica ATH-L3000.

No. The PS-1 was a limited edition produced for a German client, the PS1000 is the current Grado flagship model (said to have some similarities, though). The PS-1 I've heard had too much bass to my ears, of a sort that I wouldn't characterize as accurate and controlled, let alone well-textured. And throughout the spectrum it had a pleasing glare that made it sound «clear», but also rather unfocussed. It's a headphone made to impress, as I see it.

For me, it's the Ed8. Very nicely deep, extended and detailed bass without intruding on the rest of the spectrum. It's the best that I've heard. The D5000's were just too much for me in the bass department. However, they were the ones that introduced me to what bass extension and depth were about.

The AKG K1000 may trump it in clarity, but lack the last bit of extension.

Of the headphones I've heard, probably the best combination of bass quantity and musical clarity is the Beyer T1s. The Denon D7000s are also very good, with tremendous amounts of bass but not quite the same clarity as the T1s.

X 2. With a powerful enough amp driving them you won't find better.

What about AIAIAI?  Has any one heard there new Headphones?  Are they even out yet?
