A warning to Archos 5 160gb owners

Be careful to never leave them on for extended periods of time. Mine bricked within a few days of getting it up and running and was stuck on home screen, even after calling support we determined it to be totally bricked. I put it in the box not thinking twice about it. It was going to be shipped the next day.

I did not think about it, but the Archos is a moving part typical Hard Drive. It is not like most mp3 players. Its a real hard drive. Mine caught fire inside the box. I left it on my table and a mid afternoon the next day the box was charred and I carefully opened it up and it was partially melted. It ran really hot after an hour of use, i should have known better. It was bricked and wouldnt shut off no matter what we tried for a few hours before placing it in the box, so it was red freaking hot. I feel dumb for not thinking about it being snug into a container when it was running that hot. Clearly something sparked inside and caught flame for a few seconds.

Just a warning, be really careful with it. They get REALLY hot and can catch the box or something near by with ease.

Yea but that applies to all Archos players with a HDD, not just the 160 gb version. You should set automatic screen shut off and sleep timers on yours if you get another one.

Could you have not removed the battery to shut it down?
Removing that battery would require some removal of some very small screws and some tinkering :/

Was told not to do so by the support rep due to warranty issues. Outside of not having a screwdriver that small lol...

Epp DAP caught on fire. That's hardcore.

Ya, they run incredibly hot if used for 2+ hours or so. Enough to burn your hand after a few hours and if you put in into its original box container while its on, odds are good it will melt.

Ahh I see, I had an Archos 705 which had a removable battery.

Sue! Play dumb and say it caused some damage to something. Light some stuff on fire and blame it on it.

Only kidding but you probably could get away with it lol.

lol!

It's pretty impossible to have it melt from the inside out with the screws and edges in tact, lol. I got an immediate refund and an apology. Shame really, I really liked the look feel and features of the archos. If that were FLASH memory, I'd be very happy. But they brick easily and are junk players. :[

I guess my archos 7 must have better heat dissipation, even in the silicone jacket it's in. I've had mine on for 6-7 hours at a time on car trips, mostly playing movies. Mine gets alittle warm to the touch, but I'd say not about 110 F.
But then again this is from a 7, not a 5. I believe the only significant difference is screen size and the removable battery in the 7. Maybe there was a fault somewhere in your 5?

My Archos 5 250Gb has no issues either. sits in a stand all day in the truck playing music, however the screen does go off after 30 seconds to conserve batteries. Does get a bit warm to the touch but no more than if it were charging.

my archos 7 is fine in a leather case. Though, it does get warm and even hot at times...due to the HDD. Anyhow, I reckon the size of the 7 gives a bit of breathing room compared to the 5.

My Archos 5 250gb is fine as well, as I run it for 4-6hr shots at a time, playing videos. It get's warm, but never hot. You definitely had a defective unit, and I'd sue myself.

I mean,...........what would have happened if your car, or home for that matter, had caught on fire? People could have lost their lives over a PMP,..................that's crazy man!!!!

Anyways, glad you didn't get hurt, now get a lawyer ASAP.

Mine gets hot when I use it a lot too; I have the 5/ 250 Gig version. I could see it getting messed up if put in a confined space or something :/
