Sydney Mini Meet 06.03.10 Impressions

First off, many thanks to Eric (DevilofLife) for bringing around his new Beyer T1's for everyone to hear. Thanks as well to Tom (nattonrice) and John (johnwmclean) for bringing around their amazing rigs to listen to and drool over.

Equipment-wise, between the four of us we had the following:
2x Dual-chassis, dual-Sigma22, balanced Beta22's
2x Buffalo 32S Sabre DACs
Beyer DT880 Pro recabled to 4-pin XLR
HD800 with Twisted Cables Vortex balanced cable (2x 3-pin XLR)
Beyer T1 with stock cable
A very selfconsious-feeling HD600 with Twisted Cable Vortex
Lisa 3 with LLP
Modified Jaycar amp
AMB Y2
Pico DAC
And other things I'm sure I've forgotten

The highlight of the meet for me was John's rig, for sure. He's somehow managed to make his rig sound progressively better and better every time I meet him, and this last showing achieved perfection to my ears. Buf32S > balanced Beta22 > HD800 was, to me, as fine a dynamic rig as I've ever heard.

The T1 was definitely interesting and showcased alot of potential as a very solid, high-end allrounder headphone. It's a shame that it hadn't been recabled balanced yet, so we couldn't compare it to the HD800 out of either of the Betas. However, on both the Buf32 > Lisa 3 and Pico > Jaycar amp it performed solidly, showcasing good detail retrieval, good dynamics and a very smooth and analogue-feeling presentation. Its smaller cousin the DT880 Pro felt rather flat and lifeless in comparison (sorry Tom). It will be interesting to hear what that headphone is truly capable of when driven balanced by the likes of a Beta22. Perhaps at the next meet

As always it was a pleasure to catch up with you guys again, let's hope it's not too long before the next one

Hehe no need to apologize~ Next to the hd800 they do sound quite dull and lifeless.

My biggest impression I walked away with is that the hd800 are no where near any definition of "bass light"... well, at least not outta the beta22.

I guess the second biggest impression was that I need to by some hd800s

All in all, today was pretty cool considering this was all organized in less than 2 days!
The next proper meet will be awsome no doubt.
John and I are hoping to have some other amps finished by then for people to listen to.

Here are some happy snaps =)

HA, you dont know the meaning of the word you've got it in your head now, no stopping it, anyone who considered an all film cap bijou has it as bad as I do. check out the wima catalogue for their new huge films for next time

indeed and it will have some new and exotic flavors present; lets just say that to severely understate the power that is the unstoppable force of DIY a hobby does not properly describe the sickness that follows.

looks like a great little meet guys, should have provided a much better listening environment than the large ones. looking forward to the next one, i'll be there with some treats, but at least it seems I was well represented

Luckily for my wallet I came to my senses and only film capped the amp stage... =P

It was a great meet atmosphere wise!
Modulo some loud laughs here and there it was dead silent.

Thanks Jason for the great venue and Eric for beginning along his very new T1’s.
It was great to meet up with you sicko’s again, it’s always refreshing to find out there are people as insane as myself, possibly worse (Tom).

The highlight for me was seeing Tom’s β22 and Sabre32 rig in the flesh, the level of workmanship and attention to detail is outstanding, the Context Engineering enclosures are really something else.

The T1’s sounded promising at a very casual first listen, nearly fresh out of the box, single ended and with amps not in the same class as the balanced β22’s it held it’s own. Congrats Eric, I can’t wait till we get another opportunity with a balanced cable to rule out so many variables that were present today.

Thanks guys for a great impromptu meet!

Qusp there’s a typo in your sig! hehe....

Nah, they weren't, and they were only cabled for single-ended, so the only amps we could run it through were the Lisa 3 and your Jaycar. It still managed to sound very good, albeit a bit closed in.

Let me know when you need your amp back btw Erwin, it's a surprisingly good sounding unit. I've got Tom's Y2 at home with me at the moment as well to get more of a feel for the differences between the Y2 and Pico.
