iMod - CF mod or bigger hard drive

My iMod's hard drive giving me issue, it display "need restore" message once a while. I can get it back working again if I reformat it but it will prompt restore error in a week.

Should I do a CF mod or get a drive replacement? Not too concern on space.

I would go for the CF mod, I am planning to do the same myself.

Jeez, that's pricy. You could get a new 240gb hdd with a replacement battery thrown in here for about that much. I would go for capacity myself as ALAC music files need space...

Actually it's kinda cheap for a cf card now, and it'll get better. Besides, I'd rather have a drive w/no moving parts myself, not a HDD.

I just did the CF mod about a week ago and I love it... much faster and the battery lasts WAY longer

Used to be 60gb and now 32gb until the price of CF comes down further... All of my music is in FLAC so it would be nice to have the larger capacity still but 32gb is good enough for now and still about 1000 songs

I would go for the CF mod - sure the price/gb ratio isn't as good as the hard drive, but it will extend your battery life some 40%+ and you won't have to worry about the hard drive failing.

The hard drive on my 1st-gen 5Gb firewire iPod is still going strong; YMMV of course

The hard drive on my 20gb Creative Nomand Jukebox Zen is long dead; YMMV of course

Ordered a Tarkan adapter and a 32GB CF last weekend. I will wait for the 64GB drop below $100. 32GB will do for now.

Kool!!! The Tarkan adapter is the best IMO. Keep us posted please, as I love these modding success stories - since I should have another episode soon myself.

I have to admit, this is a pretty cool solution if capacity isn't your priority

i've just done the same after rockbox didn't play nicely with my SSD

still, it'll now leave me room to fit an internal imod

Got everything today and it only took me 15 minutes to swap the drive. The Tarkan adapter is perfect fit. I highly recommend it. No more hard drive whine sounds, pure music. Bonus, it is lighter too

Now where is the cheap 64 or 128GB CF.
